What Happened to Vince McMahon?

For much of his career, McMahon appeared untouchable. He was WWE’s fearless leader — the executive who famously took on the United States government in court and won.

From his rivalry with Ted Turner during the Monday Night Wars to clashes with WWE’s most powerful on-screen personalities, McMahon cultivated the image of an immovable force — someone who would run the company until he “died in the chair.”

That perception began to unravel in 2022, when allegations surfaced that McMahon had authorized hush money payments to former WWE employees. He announced his retirement as chairman and CEO soon after.

The retirement proved temporary. In January 2023, he returned as executive chairman to help facilitate WWE’s sale to Endeavor Group Holdings.

One year later, McMahon stepped down again after The Wall Street Journal published a report detailing sexual abuse allegations made by former WWE employee Janel Grant.

McMahon has not appeared on WWE television since, and references to him on programming have been scarce.

While he has maintained limited public associations with certain current and former talent, McMahon has largely remained at a distance from the company he once controlled.

His ex-wife, Linda McMahon, currently serves as United States Secretary of Education and has spoken little publicly about the end of their marriage.

McMahon has occasionally been seen attending sporting events with his son, Shane McMahon. However, his relationship with his daughter Stephanie McMahon and son-in-law Paul Levesque is widely believed to be more strained — due in part to their continued leadership roles within WWE and their involvement in his departure from the company.
