Rumors have surfaced that former WWE owner Vince McMahon is making moves to launch a new wrestling promotion. He's been out of the game for months now, and getting back into the grind of an upstart wrestling company at the age of 79 seems like a stretch, but speculation continues. That said, the company he's rumored to be potentially working with in FOX has a spokesperson deny any involvement.McMahon, who resigned from WWE and TKO in January 2024 amid a lawsuit alleging sexual misconduct, has largely remained out of the public eye since. Some of the charges and investigations have been dropped, but McMahon is not yet out of the woods. Still, rumors of him being interested in having a competing wrestling promotion date back to a report from PWInsider in October 2024. These latest rumors have fueled speculation that he could be serious.
On 83 Weeks, co-host Conrad Thompson spoke with former WCW President Eric Bischoff. Thompson said he'd caught wind of McMahon assembling a team that included former WWE employees, production crew, and camera people. It had gone so far as to suggest he'd even secured studio space to shoot matches and additional footage. When McMahon showed up at the Super Bowl, which aired on FOX, people started to wonder if something was going on.
There was chatter that Vince might be doing some other entertainment project, but Thompson asked, “If he’s just doing traditional entertainment, why does he need wrestling cameramen?” Bischoff acknowledged that he had heard similar rumors but didn't believe FOX would get involved in another wrestling venture. “I just can’t wrap my head around that part,” he said.
Bischoff did admit of McMahon, “He’s not the type to sit back and retire. He added, “If he’s still breathing, he’s going to be driven to conquer something.”
Despite the growing speculation, FOX has denied involvement. According to The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand, he couldn't speak to any projects McMahon might be working on, but noted that speculation about McMahon partnering with FOX is inaccurate.
While McMahon’s exact plans remain unclear, the rumors suggest he is not done with the wrestling business. Whether he can successfully launch a new promotion and kind find a network partner remains to be seen. This could be nothing. If it's something, there's also a good chance it does about as well as the XFL or WBF did.
