Vince McMahon Wanted Ronda Rousey To Eliminate Everyone In 2022 Royal Rumble

  • Vince McMahon wanted Ronda Rousey to eliminate everyone in the 2022 women's Royal Rumble.
  • Rousey was working full-time in WWE at the time and McMahon wanted to showcase her dominance.
  • That idea was scrapped and Rousey entered and won from number 28 instead.

Ronda Rousey returned to WWE following the birth of her first child during the 2022 women's Royal Rumble match, entering at number 28 and controversially going on to win and book her spot at that year's WrestleMania. However, had Vince McMahon had his way, what unfolded in that 30-person match would have been a lot more unpopular with most fans.

Vince McMahon Wanted Ronda Rousey To Eliminate Everyone

According to a new report from Fightful Select (via Cultaholic), one of McMahon's pitches for the match was for Rousey to eliminate everyone in the match. As for how exactly that would have been achieved is unclear, and others pointing out to McMahon that having Rousey do that would have been difficult, maybe even close to impossible, is likely why that idea never saw the light of day.

My guess is McMahon's idea would have begun with Rousey entering at number one and her quickly eliminating the number two entrant, and then every other opponent one by one from that point on. If the ring had started to get too full, as it quickly tends to do in Royal Rumble matches, the whole plan would have fallen apart. It would have meant other Superstars purposefully not eliminating each other, waiting for Rousey to interject and do the eliminating for them.

Rousey Has Critiqued McMahon Post-WWE Despite Him Lobbying For Her

Since Rousey had committed to a full-time schedule with WWE, McMahon wanted her to come across as being as dominant as possible. Apparently, others in the company were lobbying for Sasha Banks to win the match. Banks didn't win the match and would leave the company four months later. The middle ground all parties settled on was Rousey winning, but doing so from number 28 rather than going through the entire field.

It's interesting to hear McMahon was pushing so hard for Rousey this late in both his and the former Women's Champion's runs with WWE. Rousey has been very outspoken about her feelings on McMahon since leaving WWE. The Rowdy One claims the former chairman is the reason why her WrestleMania match against Becky Lynch never happened.

The closest we have ever seen to someone entering the Rumble and eliminating everyone was when Brock Lesnar tried to do it in 2020. Lesnar was running through every entrant one by one until he ran up against Drew McIntyre. Having made it about halfway through the match, McIntyre Claymored Lesnar over the top rope to a huge reaction from fans who feared The Beast was going to throw everyone over the top rope.
