Why AEW’s Women’s Division Will Be Its Best Ever In 2025

Changes have been made to the AEW women’s division over the last year, with the promotion handing way more time to women’s matches, feuds, promos, and more, which has in turn seen more female stars built up in the company. Signs are still looking good, and after the events of AEW’s March 19 episode of Dynamite, everything is pointing towards this being the best year yet for the division.

AEW’s visit to the Liberty First Credit Union Arena in Omaha, Nebraska was a very notable one for the women’s roster, and we will explore why things are looking really good for the division over the next year.

Athena Will Elevate The AEW Women’s Division

AEW Are Finally Pulling The Trigger On Athena

  • Athena’s protege Billie Starkz has been on Dynamite
  • Mercedes Mone hinted at a feud with Athena
  • Athena has been the rock of ROH for the last couple of years

After a short program with Billie Starkz concluded on AEW Dynamite, Mercedes Mone questioned who trained and mentored Starkz, heavily hinting that ROH Women’s World Champion Athena will be on AEW programming sooner rather than later. ROH hasn’t exactly set the world alight, but Athena has been one of, if not the main highlight of the brand ever since Tony Khan rebirthed the promotion.

Her quality as an overall performer has improved so much over the last couple of years, main eventing PPVs and being the face of an entire division, thriving in that spot. AEW finally making the decision to bring her back over from ROH is a brilliant (albeit overdue) decision, and she will add so much star power and quality to the women’s division. She has earned this spot with her strong ROH run, and if her move to AEW in 2025 is full time, then the company has another big star on their hands.

Women’s Matches Are Main Eventing More On TV

AEW Is Handing The Division More Opportunities

In 2024, Dynamite and Collision were headlined eight times by women’s matches. Just three months into 2025, and we have already reached half of that number, with women’s bouts closing out match cards on four occasions thus far. It is certainly still not enough, but it is an indication that AEW is more serious about pushing the division to a higher level.

If AEW continues with this trend and frequency of women’s main events, the division will undoubtedly grow into something more prominent. It isn’t just the established stars either, as Megan Bayne’s main event on March 19 was just her sixth match on AEW programming, which shows that AEW are taking risks, giving new people a chance, and committed to building new stars.

Toni Storm Is Becoming An Even Bigger Star

Storm’s Star Power Has Exploded In 2025

  • Last year was a huge year for ‘Timeless’ Toni Storm
  • 2025 has built on her momentum and made her an even bigger name
  • Her match at Revolution has made her even more over

It is very easy for a gimmick to become repetitive, same-y, and a victim of doing the same thing over and over. Toni Storm has managed to avoid this. Her charisma, character performance, and the fact that she’s going two feet into making this gimmick larger than life, has helped to create one of AEW’s biggest stars and perhaps even the most important member of the AEW roster.

Storm is a defined star and at this rate she has bypassed many of her male counterparts in terms of popularity and recognition. AEW have been smart to keep her in the main event and around the AEW World Championship, as she can help elevate all those around her too. Storm’s program with Mariah May helped to produce a young star in May, who is already established despite being just 26. She is massively important to the division in 2025, and her popularity will ensure that it thrives this year.

Mercedes Mone Is Getting Back To Her Best

Mone Has Been Getting Better And Better In AEW

  • It was a slow start for Mercedes Mone in AEW
  • Her TBS Title reign has featured some great matches
  • If Mone is at her best, the division will grow

Mercedes Mone is the most recognisable name on the AEW women’s roster, and she just so happens to also be one of the best wrestlers in the world when she is on her game. This supreme version of Mone has steadily been unlocked, notably towards the end of last year in her classics with Kris Statlander.

In 2025, she has continued this good form with several strong title defenses and an increased comfortability in her character work. She is hugely important to the success and long-term growth of the AEW women’s division, and with her now back at her best, it means that this year will also be the best yet for the division.
