Why Brock Lesnar Is WWE's True Mr. SummerSlam

If WWE SummerSlam 2026 marks Brock Lesnar's final appearance at The Biggest Party of the Summer, it will also close the book on one of the greatest event legacies in WWE history.

Lesnar will face Oba Femi inside Hell in a Cell in Minneapolis, the city he has long called home after winning an NCAA Division I championship at the University of Minnesota. Whether this is his final match or simply his last SummerSlam, no superstar has become more synonymous with the event.

The story began at SummerSlam 2002, arguably the greatest SummerSlam of all time. In the main event, the 25-year-old Lesnar defeated The Rock to capture the Undisputed WWE Championship in one of the company's defining passing-of-the-torch moments. The Rock would never again wrestle as a full-time WWE superstar, while Lesnar immediately became the face of the next generation in his rookie year.

The Event Became Brock Lesnar's Personal Stage

Just a year later, Lesnar and Kurt Angle delivered an underrated match that demonstrates both athletes' unmatched in-ring abilities.

When Lesnar returned to WWE in 2012, SummerSlam quickly became his annual showcase outside of WrestleMania.

He faced Triple H, The Undertaker, Randy Orton, and Roman Reigns in marquee attractions that felt larger than life simply because Lesnar was involved. Even when those matches weren't universally considered classics, they were spectacles that helped define their respective SummerSlam events.

SummerSlam 2014 stands alone.

Lesnar's destruction of John Cena introduced the world to "Suplex City" and fundamentally changed how WWE presented both men. Cena had never been dominated so completely, making the match one of the most shocking and influential championship performances of the modern era.

My favorite Lesnar SummerSlam memory came in 2022, when I attended his Last Man Standing Match against Roman Reigns in Nashville. When Lesnar drove a tractor into the ring and sent one side of it soaring into the air, the stadium erupted. It remains one of the loudest reactions I've ever experienced at a live wrestling event and perfectly captured why Lesnar and SummerSlam have become such a natural pairing.

If you've never seen it—or it's been years since you have—WWE recently uploaded a director's cut version of the match to YouTube. Watch it below.

One Final SummerSlam Moment Awaits

Lesnar's surprise WWE return in 2025 only added to his SummerSlam mythology. Considering the allegations that linked him to the Vince McMahon–Janel Grant lawsuit and the belief among many fans that his WWE career was over, his comeback ranked among the most genuinely unexpected returns in wrestling history.

Now, he returns to Minneapolis for what could be one final SummerSlam performance against Oba Femi inside Hell in a Cell.

Whether Lesnar wrestles again after this remains to be seen. But if this is the end of his SummerSlam career, he'll leave behind an unmatched résumé: the coronation of a new superstar, technical classics, the birth of Suplex City, unforgettable spectacles, and moments that defined multiple generations of WWE fans.

That's why Brock Lesnar isn't just one of the greatest performers in SummerSlam history—he's WWE's true Mr. SummerSlam.
