At first glance, Jacob Fatu doesn’t possess the typical clean-cut look of a top star in WWE. This is despite his weekly crowd reactions indicating that he is one of the most over members on the entire roster.
The man was not lying when he said that he’s “all gas and no brakes with it,” as the Samoan Werewolf has ascended into becoming a key player on Friday Night SmackDown since he debuted a year ago. This culminated in a United States Championship win at his first WrestleMania.
Whether it is his seizure-like shakes, his growing collection of catchphrases, or his explosive in-ring style, there are many reasons why fans have warmed to the Sacramento native. WWE fans had been expecting Fatu for months prior to his first appearance on SmackDown in June, and it did not disappoint.
On his first night, he single-handedly took out three premier talents in Randy Orton, Kevin Owens, and then-WWE Champion Cody Rhodes as he joined his cousin Solo Sikoa’s version of The Bloodline.
Over the past year, Triple H has made sure to be protective in the way he has booked the US Champ, as he is yet to suffer a pinfall or submission. The 33-year-old has also been showcased as WWE’s most monstrous threat, especially after his battles with Braun Strowman.
Although their bout at Saturday Night’s Main Event ended in disqualification because Fatu repeatedly crushed Strowman’s skull with vicious running hip attacks. Fatu had the bloodthirsty crowd in the palm of his hand as they chanted “One More Time!” He also pummelled Strowman with numerous double springboard moonsaults.
This was arguably the moment that changed things for Sikoa’s enforcer. The “I love you, Solo!” catchphrase had worn out its welcome, and this was Fatu’s first important match without Sikoa by his side. It was also the moment in which Fatu overshadowed his cousin.
An impressive display at the annual Royal Rumble event in February followed, and since then, Fatu has been trending upwards in the eyes of the fans. The son of Sam Fatu (aka The Tonga Kid), Jacob has inherited the best traits of his family, making him a recipe for success in the professional wrestling industry.
His in-ring work can be described as an athletic version of his late uncle, Umaga. His promo style follows similar patterns to that of his cousins, The Usos, however, it has an intimidating intensity that makes it unique.
Fans who are glued to social media have fallen in love with Fatu’s personality as he behaves unapologetically authentic. Whether that was him breaking kayfabe to congratulate his cousin Jey Uso after winning the Royal Rumble, or his hilarious interview on the Club 520 podcast hosted by former Atlanta Hawk Jeff Teague, among other endearing moments.
There is no doubt that Fatu is WWE’s next breakout star, and fans are yearning for the day that the company pulls the trigger on him eventually turning on his cousin Sikoa. When that happens, the fans in attendance will be sure to go wild.
Despite the man having a rugged and slightly rotund look, akin to the likes of Mankind and Bray Wyatt, fans seem not to care about his appearance as the Samoan Werewolf has the aura of a top star. Those two names also managed to win the WWE Championship.
It would be impossible not to view Fatu as a future World Champion and, with Money in the Bank taking place at the Intuit Dome in his home state of California next month, that championship win could happen sooner rather than later.
