Why WWE’s DIY Deserve Another NXT Run
WWE

The September 2, 2025, episode of WWE NXT was a very important one for Trick Williams. Proclaimed himself to be the “greatest NXT superstar ever”, the current TNA Champion went on social media and challenged any former NXT star to come down to the ring to face him. Instead of one person, he got two people confronting him.

Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa, also known as DIY, came out to incredible cheers from the NXT audience. They have an extensive resume, with many accolades and championships won during their time in the brand. The three men compared stats, but in the end, Williams was met with a Meet in the Middle to leave Gargano and Ciampa standing tall. This may lead to a tag team match in the near future. But DIY should have a proper final NXT run before their days in WWE come to an end.

Gargano and Ciampa are NXT Legends

Since NXT launched as WWE’s third brand in 2012, many stars have wrestled there. Some wrestlers’ runs only lasted a couple of months. Others have gone on to make a tremendous impact on the main roster. But there are a select few that spent years on the brand, enough to fully integrate themselves into NXT history.

Gargano and Ciampa were on the brand for 7 and 8 years, respectively. The team held the NXT Tag Team Championships for 69 days and had separate runs as NXT Champions when they competed separately. Both men have etched their names into NXT history several times, with fans saying they are synonymous with the brand. The reaction of the crowd showed that they are still appreciated in the brand they started in. A final run for DIY should come as a thank you for their time in NXT, whenever that may be.

Many Main Roster Stars Had Success in NXT

Over the past couple of years, many main roster wrestlers have made their way to the developmental program. They weren’t there for a match or two, like a reunion type of situation. These wrestlers reinvented themselves while helping out the younger generation. Dolph Ziggler and Mandy Rose were NXT Champions. Ridge Holland was a highlight during his brief run with Chase University and is now on WWE Evolve facing some of the company’s brightest young prospects. Shawn Spears has done a great job as part of the Culling since his return last year.

Gargano and Ciampa would definitely fit that mold, as they’ve worked with several emerging stars and have a general idea of how the brand works. It’s obvious the fans want it to happen, as evident on Tuesday. DIY should follow in the footsteps of past main roster stars, as another NXT run will improve their legacy.

DIY Deserve Their NXT Flowers

What Gargano and Ciampa have done for NXT should not be understated at all. They are part of a select group of people that are instantly thought of whenever people bring up the brand. When Williams made his challenge, it made complete sense for the two of them to confront him. Their matches and highlights from their NXT career are part of the best things the brand has produced. Even their breakups and subsequent matches against each other all had NXT fans raving about how good they were.

There’s a reason fans still bring up those matches in conversations today. It’s only right for DIY to have a proper farewell in NXT, which could very well happen many years down the line. They’ve done so much for the brand, and it’s only right for them to return at the proper moment to the brand that made them legends.
