Wrestlemania 42 is on its way, ready or not. It wouldn’t be Wrestlemania season without the main roster seeing its fair share of injuries. It’s fair to say World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) programming is widely known as a scripted program, sometimes referred to as a “man’s soap opera.” However, just because it’s scripted doesn’t mean that injuries can’t and won’t happen. Sometimes they do a good job making you think an injury is real when it’s actually fake, something the late, great WWE Hall of Famer Eddie Guerrero perfected.
We are five weeks away from the pinnacle of Sports Entertainment, the two-night extravaganza known as Wrestlemania, and the card is still up in the air. Changes in the popularity of the superstars in the company, as well as injuries, are causing massive changes to the potential card. At this moment, there is no clear opponent for the companies’ top title in the main event of Wrestlemania 42: Drew McIntyre’s WWE Championship.
In this article, we are going to take a look at one of the more prominent cases of the injury bug drastically affecting Wrestlemania 42. It all stems back to the “Ruse of the Century” from Summerslam when Seth Rollins came back from a fake injury, ironically.
After Seth Rollins feigned his knee injury, he cashed in his Money In The Bank briefcase on the unsuspecting champion at the time, CM Punk. Claiming the World Heavyweight Championship for a second time in the current rendition of the belt, Rollins was going to bring something fresh to the title scene coming off this cash-in. This was all a part of a long-game plan revealed on the Netflix series “Unreal” contrived by COO Paul “Triple H” Levesque.
Call it karma, or just bad luck, but shortly after this feigned injury was revealed, Seth Rollins sustained a true shoulder injury in a title defense. Once they learned that the injury was real and would require significant time away from the scene, the plans began to change.
In the following episode of Raw, an angle was executed of the rebellion of the other members of Seth’s faction, the Vision. This rebellion was enacted by Bron Breaker and, after some convincing, Bronson Reed, all while Paul Heyman stood there in shock. As the following months would show, the Vision was under new leadership, and Bron Breaker was making his moves up the card.
As the Wrestlemania card began to develop further and storylines continued to progress along, the Vision was hit with another injury. After being eliminated early from the Royal Rumble after being attacked by the mysterious masked man, Bron Breaker was enraged. He went on a tear throughout the roster, including having more run-ins with the on-screen authority figure, Adam Pearce.
So enraged that during a tirade on the February 2nd episode of Raw, flipped the commentary table and attacked other wrestlers, and was diagnosed with a serious hernia. This act of rage, unfortunately, required surgery and has him sidelined indefinitely.
Injuries- 2, Vision- 0.
With two big players down and the Vision faction being down two of their top members, it was time for others to step up and step in. With the addition of Austin Theory and YouTube sensation and WWE wrestler Logan Paul, Vision had its numbers back up. Unfortunately, injuries still plague this faction.
On the February 23rd episode of Raw, in an Elimination Chamber qualification match, the injury bug claimed its third victim on the Vision. Bronson Reed was looking to qualify for the chamber, with the winner of the chamber earning a World Championship opportunity at Wrestlemania 42. Attempting to break up a pin during his triple-threat match, his arm made contact and broke up the pin, but caused a tear in his biceps tendon.
The string of injuries that the Vision has dealt with has left them as the “most snakebitten” group in recent WWE history. What makes this case all the more frustrating is how it’s so near and gravely affecting the Wrestlemania 42 card.
3-0. We’re looking at a “Vision”-less Wrestlemania 42 card.
While it’s an unfortunate circumstance, injuries happen. Just like in other professional sports, it’s next man up. Obviously its way easier said than done, but that’s what has to occur, however, it might not be possible. The WWE has a constant issue of not properly building up new stars; complaints of the same old head, year after year. When the company refuses to build up multiple people, you find yourself in a pickle when that one person is out with an injury.
Moral of the story: Never put all your eggs into one basket, because you never know when it might crack under the Wrestlemania 42 lights.
The WWE may have caught a break with the return of Seth Rollins as of this past weekend’s ‘Elimination Chamber.’ Returning to live programming as the masked man to thwart Logan Paul’s chances inside the titular event of the night. Could we be seeing some structure for the Wrestlemania 42 card? One can only hope.
