In storyline, Gunther has been both fined and suspended for attacking Pat McAfee on WWE Raw.
The post-WrestleMania 41 Raw episode included an angle where Gunther — furious after losing the World Heavyweight Championship to Jey Uso — confronted the commentary team. When Cole brought up Gunther tapping out to Uso, the former champion snapped and started to attack him. McAfee stood up for Cole but ended up being choked out by Gunther.
WWE shared a video from Raw General Manager Adam Pearce today announcing that Gunther has been fined an undisclosed amount of money and suspended indefinitely.

“Your actions were reprehensible and disgusting. You will never again put your hands on a member of my announce team, because there ain’t no heat in beating up an announcer,” Pearce said. “You’re frustrated because you lost the World Heavyweight Championship to Jey Uso, and I get that. But if you want to blame somebody, then park your ass in front of a mirror and ask the person staring back at you.”
Pearce said Cole and McAfee will be on Raw this coming in their usual commentary roles. Joe Tessitore filled in for McAfee for the remainder of the show earlier this week after Gunther’s attack.
McAfee addressed the angle on his ESPN show on Tuesday, saying he won’t let anyone get away with intimidating Cole.
“I was sticking up for Michael Cole. He grabbed up Michael Cole. He was going to choke out Michael Cole? Yeah right, can’t be having that. So what happens next here now? I don’t know, you tell me. Just know that I’m bout it, bout it for whatever,” McAfee said. “And if you think that choking me out is going to end me, you’re wrong. If you think you were going to bury me publicly and I’m going to quit showing up, you’re wrong. But I know you’re not going to mess with Michael Cole and get away with it. I don’t care how big, strong, intimidating, how good your rear naked choke is — I don’t care about any of that, okay? Michael Cole is a good man. We appreciate Michael Cole. And whenever you start attacking him, things like that are going to happen.”
Gunther was World Heavyweight Champion for more than eight months prior to dropping the title to Uso.
