Nick Aldis, who has spent the last two years in an authority role within WWE (the SmackDown general manager), may not be finished as an in-ring competitor, according to his wife, WWE Hall of Famer Mickie James. She revealed that while he's embraced the character and is doing an incredible job in an authority role, he's not giving up on the idea that he could wrestle again.
Aldis signed with WWE in August 2023, initially working as a backstage producer before being named the General Manager of SmackDown. Speaking on Insight With Chris Van Vliet, van Vliet said on his show while talking to James, "Nick plays this GM role so perfectly." He adds, "It's almost like a stern parent." James agreed and suggested, in her humble opinion, that he might rival Teddy Long as one of the best GMs in the history of the business.
Aldis serves as the GM of SmackDown, while Adam Pearce serves on Raw. Both were former in-ring competitors, but since signing, Aldis has not competed in a WWE match. He has taken a couple of bumps -- most notably, an on-screen RKO from Randy Orton ahead of WrestleMania 41 -- but he's not yet had a match despite never officially retiring. Reports later indicated that WWE had no concrete plans for Aldis to wrestle, but James says the former NWA and TNA star remains open to stepping back into the ring.
James emphasized that her husband is “far from done” as a professional wrestler.
“Oh, my God, yes. Oh, he’s far from done. I mean, I think if he was ever given, and I would pray for the perfect opportunity and story or whatever, but I think that if he’s ever given an opportunity to put on his boots and get out in that ring, I know it would be a dream come true for him.”
While it might not be today or anytime soon, WWE should take advantage of Aldis' desire to wrestle again. He is a decorated veteran, a multi-time World Heavyweight Champion, and he's still in tremendous shape. For now, he's in a good spot, but before he ultimately wants to retire, a rivalry in WWE makes a lot of sense.
While Aldis continues to make his mark as SmackDown’s General Manager, fans of the former TNA star may get a chance to see him lace up his boots once again if the right opportunity arises.
