Ever since Becky Lynch helped Seth Rollins beat CM Punk at Clash in Paris, it's been heavily rumored that AJ Lee will return to WWE for the first time since 2015 to fight alongside her husband and level the playing field. Those rumors now appear to have been confirmed thanks to whoever is in charge of WWE Shop's Twitter account getting a little ahead of themselves.
A fan tagged WWE Shop in a post asking where the AJ Lee merch is, wanting something new to wear ready for SmackDown in Chicago this Friday. It's believed that even if Lee doesn't show up on Friday, Punk will either confirm or heavily imply that she will be back to exact revenge on Lynch on his behalf.
The WWE Shop account responded to an inquiry regarding AJ Lee merchandise:“With AJ Lee's return to the ring, we are looking to have some 🔥 gear hopefully in time for Wrestlepalooza.â€Uhhhh 😠pic.twitter.com/2H9t3VcGOd— WrestlePurists (@WrestlePurists) September 3, 2025
Even though WWE Shop is tagged in the tweet, the post seems to have been intended as a joke, and the fan probably wasn't expecting a response. They definitely wouldn't have expected a response that proceeded to break the internet in the middle of the night. Not only did the account confirm Lee is coming back in its reply, but it more or less made her in-ring return at Wrestlepalooza official.
"With AJ Lee's return to the ring, we are looking to have some [fire] gear hopefully in time for Wrestlepalooza," the tweet reads. The post was, unsurprisingly, deleted moments after it was posted, but despite the late hour at which it was shared, the damage had already been done. The post was seen, which means fans took screenshots, and it has since been shared far and wide on social media.
How exactly something like this happens is unclear. It doesn't look like the post was shared by someone trying to make a joke or someone trying to lose their job and go down in flames in the process, although I imagine whoever shared the post is in big trouble. It was seemingly just someone who knows AJ Lee merch is coming, but somehow didn't know that her highly anticipated return hasn't even been officially hinted at yet, let alone confirmed.
The plan appears to be to have Lee return and team with Punk at Wrestlepalooza for a mixed tag match against Rollins and Lynch. If that happens, it will be Lee's first match in over a decade. Lee teamed with Paige in a winning effort against The Bellas at WrestleMania 31, and then competed in her final match the night after on Raw. The length of time between then and now is why her potential return is being treated like such a big deal, and why WWE higher-ups will be furious it was spoiled by one of the company's accounts.
