WWE Fans Pick John Cena's Next Opponent After Getting What They Wanted At Crown Jewel
WWE

It's probably fair to say that John Cena 's retirement tour hasn't been exactly what most fans imagined it might be. After various stops and starts, the Brock Lesnar match was the final straw that led to a fan campaign to force WWE into making a Cena vs. AJ Styles match happen. It worked, and now that match has been and gone, fans have started to lobby for his next opponent with only four appearances left to go.

Fans Want John Cena To Face Dominik Mysterio

The next opponent fans have in mind for Cena is Dominik Mysterio. Probably not a surprise to many of you, as Dirty Dom has been on the Cena retirement shortlist for pretty much all of 2025. However, with hardly any matches left, and WWE doubling down on its claims that the fans made the Styles match happen, if you don't ask for what you want now, we're never going to get it.

Even though Cena is confirmed to be appearing in WWE four more times before riding off into the sunset, it's not guaranteed he will actually wrestle on all those dates. The only events he will almost certainly compete in a match are Survivor Series, and then Saturday Night's Main Event on December 13, the show that got moved from Cena's hometown to Washington DC.

Some Fans Want Cena To Face Mysterio Twice

That's why, as it stands, the chosen event for Cena vs. Mysterio is Survivor Series, with someone already making a very legitimate-looking promotional poster for the dream match. Fans want that match, in particular, not only because Mysterio is clearly someone who will be at the top of the WWE card for years to come, but by beating him, Cena could end his career by doing something he has never done before.

Despite wrestling in WWE for more than two decades, Cena has never been the Intercontinental Champion. One popular suggestion is that Cena beats Mysterio for the IC Title at Survivor Series, and then loses the title back to Dom in his final match at Saturday Night's Main Event, elevating the young Superstar even more than he has already been elevated in his final match.

With potentially just two matches left until he's gone forever, that would mean giving Mysterio not one, but both of those final slots. That might be a tough pill to swallow for fans who have other opponents in mind - particularly with rumors swirling that a returning Gunther is being eyed to retire Cena - but think of the stock it would give Mysterio on his continued ascent.
