WWE Hall of Famer Shoots on ‘Hypocrite’ Allegations Against CM Punk for Traveling to Saudi Arabia Despite past Controversy

Lacing a pair of wrestling boots in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia will go down as a watershed moment in CM Punk‘s WWE career. Back in 2020, when he dumped on The Miz in a highly inflammatory post targeting the Arab nation, no one would have thought that Punk would apologize to the entire fanbase one fine day.

But that’s exactly what happened during the Night of Champions kickoff show in Riyadh. The real-life Phil Brooks was repentant about his previous comments and issued a heartfelt apology to the people of Saudi Arabia. Does that make him a hypocrite? It surely doesn’t, believes Rob Van Dam. Speaking on his 1 Of A Kind podcast, the ECW legend explained why Punk’s case is different.

The WWE Hall of Famer affirmed that people change with time, and so does their perspective. If the ‘Second City Saint’ said something negative about the Middle Eastern country several years ago but is now sorry for it, that, in ‘RVD’s’ book, is growth and not hypocrisy.

I don’t consider it hypocrisy unless it is done at the same time, because people can grow, the perspective could change. It’s so, if he said something five years ago and then now, he feels different about it, then that not what a hypocrite is…If he’s signing the contract, he’s on his way, he’s gonna go, get big money in Saudi Arabia. And at the same time, he messages ‘I fu***ng hate people who go to Saudi Arabia, they suck and then he goes,’ you know that’s different because its the same guy at the same time, showing two different faces..That’s what a hypocrite is.

The 54-year-old elaborated further, stating that Punk would have been a hypocrite had he accepted a lucrative offer to perform in Saudi Arabia while continuing to criticize others for choosing to do the same. Punk landed in hot water just upon arriving in Riyadh when he was spotted ignoring a kid’s request for a photograph.

Moreover, ‘The Best in the World’ was even heavily booed at the Night of Champions kickoff until a fan called him out for his 2020-made post, as mentioned in the beginning. The apology that followed came directly from Punk’s heart, so even Triple H was moved by it.

Triple H was proud of CM Punk’s change of heart

During the post-show press conference at Night of Champions, Triple H talked about CM Punk‘s apology to Saudi Arabia. ‘The Game’ mentioned that it wouldn’t have happened ten years ago. But the WWE head honcho called Punk’s growth as a human being in the meantime a privilege to watch.

The fans in Riyadh realized how apologetic the former WWE Champion was from inside, and they cheered him at the top of their lungs as he took on John Cena for the Undisputed WWE title. On the previous night on SmackDown, the former AEW star cosplayed one of Cena’s early WWE gimmicks– the ‘Doctor of Thuganomics.’

‘The Best in the World’ had to come up with something after the Hollywood mogul dropped his version of the ‘pipebomb’ on Punk. Both of those segments were thoroughly enjoyed by the WWE Universe. But the match result didn’t go Punk’s way. He got screwed over once again by Seth Rollins. The 2025 Money in the Bank winner’s interference cost the 46-year-old a realistic shot at dethroning Cena for the world title. But it seems that Cena still holds Punk in high regard.

John Cena includes CM Punk in his list of ‘GOAT’ trash talkers

It’s pivotal for one to possess a certain quality of talking trash about their opponents, outside of having a decent moveset, to make it big in WWE. There have been a number of exceptional promo-cutting names in this business, but the cream always rises to the top.

John Cena recently unveiled his list of greatest trash talkers in wrestling while speaking to Complex. The Cenation Leader included “Rowdy” Roddy Piper , “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, The Rock, and CM Punk. Cena and Punk recently gave the fans a little taste of what they bring to the table when put together in a feud with back-to-back promos on SmackDown.

In fact, the fans were highly underwhelmed by the WWE Champion’s villainous arc until WWE introduced ‘The Best in the World’ to make it, as Punk said, more palatable. It’s unknown at this point if Cena and Punk would ever be in the same ring again after their Night of Champions showdown. But if they do, the fans will certainly rejoice over it.
