Goldberg wrestled his last match over the weekend at Saturday Night's Main Event and has wasted no time in sharing his feelings about how it all went down. On top of confirming he isn't happy about how WWE built to, and then executed, his retirement, the Hall of Famer revealed that he stopped his son Gage from signing a NIL contract with WWE.
Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show this week, Goldberg confirmed that WWE offered Gage an NIL deal. The contract is still a relatively new concept in WWE. NIL stands for both Next In Line and Name Image Likeness, and the contracts are usually offered to athletes who are proficient in other sports, tying them to a potential future with WWE should they opt to take up pro wrestling, or if their other plans fall through.
Much like his dad, Gage is eyeing a career in the NFL with pro wrestling a potential backup. That's exactly why WWE offered the second-generation star a contract. However, when Goldberg saw the deal, he stepped in and told his son not to sign.
They tried to give him an NIL (deal), but when I found out how much they were going to give him, I put the brakes on that one - Goldberg
Exactly how much Gage was offered wasn't revealed. However, it's believed that most WWE NIL signees are offered a low five-figure sum. Effectively enough to help them through college before they potentially join the company full time on the other side and, hopefully, start earning a lot more as they potentially become a WWE Superstar.
If that's the kind of offer WWE made to Gage, then that'll be why Goldberg stepped in and said no. That probably won't be the end of this, though. Goldberg added that he expects WWE to pursue Gage in the future and that they would be fools not to. Triple H also commented on Gage, claiming he could see a glint in his eye when he's around WWE and watching his dad perform in the ring.
If Gage and Goldberg need evidence that the NIL program can lead to bigger and better things, they need look no further than Bron Breakker. Breakker was one of the first to sign an NIL deal with WWE, and now he's on a fast track to becoming one of the top stars in the company. Breakker is already on the main roster, and it's only a matter of time until he wins his first World Championship.
