WWE Legend Passes Away

Funk Jr. Left a Lasting Legacy

Dory Funk Jr. was one of the most technically gifted and influential professional wrestlers in sports entertainment history.

He made his professional debut in 1963 after playing college football at West Texas State University. Among his accomplishments, he defeated Gene Kiniski on February 11, 1969, to win the prestigious NWA World Heavyweight Championship.

Funk held the NWA title for 1,563 consecutive days, cementing the second-longest uninterrupted world title reign in the promotion’s history. He is also credited with inventing the Texas cloverleaf, an iconic submission hold still widely used by modern wrestlers today.

He and his younger brother, Terry Funk, formed a legendary tag team that revolutionized and popularized wrestling in Japan throughout the 1970s and 1980s. They became the only pair of brothers in wrestling history to each capture the NWA World Heavyweight Championship.

Following his wrestling career, he directly molded the careers of future megastars and icons. That included Kurt Angle, Edge, Christian, Matt and Jeff Hardy, Lita, and Mark Henry.

In the end, Dory Funk Jr. was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame alongside his brother Terry in 2009.
