The fifth episode of season two of WWE LFG: Legends and Future Greats showcased the wrestlers either working big or small during their matches. Shawn Michaels and the legends were looking for the classic David vs. Goliath storytelling from the future greats.
Elijah Holyfield put it perfectly earlier in the episode when he called himself a hybrid between big and small. He is a big person due to the amount of muscle he has, but he is not the tallest in the competition. Anthony Luke is not as muscular as Holyfield, but he is taller.
The legends wanted to see how the wrestlers would work with Luke being the big one and Holyfield being the small. Luke started the match by shadowboxing, mocking Holyfield and his famous boxing father, Evander Holyfield. He then went for multiple clothesline attempts, but Holyfield dodged all of them by either rolling under or leapfrogging over, leading to Luke rolling out of the ring.
Luke would gain the upper hand again when catching a diving Holyfield on the outside and ramming his back into the apron and ring post. After getting back into the ring, Luke kept rolling with multiple powerful clotheslines and scoop slams. Holyfield slowly got up each time, only to be met with either another scoop slam or suplex.
Luke then put Holyfield into a sleeperhold, wrenching him around. Holyfield briefly worked out of it, only for Morreaux to slam him back down by the back of his head. After Holyfield got back up one final time, he reversed another suplex to turn it into a spear into the corner, followed by a bulldog.
In one final gasp, Luke went for another scoop slam, only for Holyfield to reverse it into a full nelson slam for the win. Each time Holyfield wrestles, he shows his athleticism in new and impressive ways. The legends were also impressed with his ability to work as the smaller wrestler in the match.
Luke struggled with playing the role of the bigger man. He was more methodical with his moves than he had been before. It was obvious that he was trying to think through working big, leading to a slower pace than usually seen from him.
The dynamic for this match was obvious from the moment it was scheduled. Dani Sekelsky is the shortest wrestler in the competition, and Penina Tuilaeapa is one of the tallest women.
The match began with a lockup, but Tuilaeapa quickly gained the upper hand by tossing Sekelsky into the corner. Sekelsky tried to target Tuilaepa’s legs, but Tuilaepa kept kicking her off and continued to toss her around.
She picked up Sekelsky for a power bomb, but Sekelsky tried fighting back with a barrage of punches. Tuilaepa held strong, and she turned it into a Samoan drop for a close pin count.
Tuilaepa put Sekelsky into an abdominal stretch, but she reversed it with elbows to Tuilaepa’s stomach. This momentum for Sekelsky was short-lived, as Tuilaepa put her back into the corner to wrench her ankle around the bottom rope and wrap her back around the post.
With one final spear, Tuilaeapa seemed to have the match won, as Sekelsky was lying motionless on the mat. But, as Tuilaepa approached for the pin, Sekelsky revealed she was playing possum and locked in the Hell’s Gate submission. Tuilaepa tried powering out of the move, but she had no choice but to tap out, giving Sekelsky the win.
This was the match of the night. Tuilaepa looked like a monster, as she perfectly and with power, executed all of her offense. Sekelsky played the underdog role perfectly, as her selling made Tuilaepa’s offense look that much more impactful.
Drake Morreaux is the tallest competitor this season. By default, Chris Island took the role of the smaller wrestler.
The match began with Morreaux attempting to swing a weapon he brought to the ring at Island, who dodged it. Morreaux would gain the advantage early with a big boot. A missed splash by Morreaux opened the door for Island, but an attempted German suplex allowed Morreaux to get back into the match.
There was a scary moment in the match when Morreaux attempted a backdrop on Island. An awkward transition led to the move being botched, causing both wrestlers to fly into the corner. They bounced back with a back-and-forth exchange of punches.
Morreaux took Island to the ground with an array of punches followed by a heavy splash. Island gained momentum again by reversing a sleeper hold into a shoulder tackle and an Angle slam. Island climbed to the top rope, but Morreaux caught him for a chokeslam and the victory.
Morreaux and Island told the story well. It was obvious who was the giant heel and who was the small babyface.
The two wrestlers struggled to execute their moves within the match. There was the backdrop botch, and Island struggled to get up in the air for Morreaux’s chokeslam.
Bayley Humphrey has been the monster of the female wrestlers on LFG since the first season. Summer Sorrell had her hands full as the small babyface in their match.
Almost immediately after locking up, Humphrey slammed Sorrell down to the mat. They locked up again, and again Humphrey tossed Sorrell aside. As Sorrell gathered herself, the crowd began a “Bayley’s gonna kill you” chant, to which Humphrey encouraged.
Upon the third lock-up, Sorrell was able to get Humphrey into a headlock, which was reversed into a Humphrey shoulder tackle. A fourth lock-up resulted in Sorrell and Humphrey exchanging arm locks, slowing down the pace of the match.
Humphrey gained back the momentum by putting Sorrell into a bear hug and ramming her into the corner. She then hit Sorrell with a string of shoulder tackles. Humphrey scooped Sorrell and put her into a modified torture rack.
Sorrell escaped but was immediately hit with a shoulder tackle. She avoided a Humphrey elbow drop, leading to a crucifix roll-up for a nearfall. Sorrell ran off the ropes at Humphrey, but Humphrey caught and powerbombed her, leading to a Humphrey win.
Sorrell did a good job selling for Humphrey and helping her look like a monster. Humphrey was the dominant force she typically is in her matches, but there was a desire from the legends for her to have been more powerful with her moves.
For the women, Tuilaepa received all four votes to earn a point for Team Michelle McCool. For the men, it was three votes for Holyfield and Team Bubba Ray Dudley to earn the team’s second point of the season.
