It has been a busy week in WWE, both on television and behind the scenes.

From an increasingly interesting contract situation involving Bayley to Ilja Dragunov’s surprising departure, here’s what you need to know from the week in WWE news and rumors.

Bayley’s WWE Future Remains Uncertain

One of WWE’s most accomplished women could potentially be nearing the end of her time with the company.

Bayley’s current contract is expected to expire before the end of 2026, and she has reportedly not signed a new deal. Fightful has Bayley’s deal listed as expiring in late 2026, while Dave Meltzer has reported that Bayley has a decision to make regarding her future.

That becomes especially interesting with AEW looming. Fightful Select reported last month that Bayley’s potential free agency has been a topic of conversation within AEW for quite some time, with the company expected to have significant interest if she becomes available.

I would be surprised to see Bayley leave WWE, but this feels much less automatic than it once did. She has accomplished virtually everything there is to accomplish in WWE, and the opportunity to do something completely different at this stage of her career has to at least be intriguing.

Ilja Dragunov Leaves WWE

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the week was Ilja Dragunov allowing his WWE contract to expire.

WWE reportedly hoped to retain Dragunov, making his departure particularly surprising given how much untapped potential he still had on the main roster.

I’ve written plenty about my disappointment here. Dragunov had legitimate future world champion potential and possessed a rare combination: he presented himself like a serious athlete but had enough character range to thrive in WWE’s sports entertainment environment.

AEW feels like an obvious possibility. My concern is whether Dragunov would stand out as much on a roster filled with great in-ring wrestlers as he did in WWE, where his intensity and style made him feel completely different from almost everyone else.

John Cena Classic Reportedly Targeted for December

We may finally know when WWE’s John Cena Classic is happening.

According to a report from False Finish, WWE is looking at Saturday, December 12 for the event, although no location has been determined.

The concept remains one of WWE’s more fascinating experiments: main-roster and NXT wrestlers competing on the same card, with fans ultimately voting for the inaugural John Cena Classic Champion.

Done correctly, this could become WWE’s version of an annual All-Star Game — and a great platform for younger talent to get meaningful exposure without needing a championship storyline.

Kevin Owens Reveals How Quickly He Was Cleared to Return

Kevin Owens has wasted little time making an impact since returning from the neck injury that kept him out for more than a year.

This week, Owens revealed that a WWE medical clearance process that normally takes around four weeks was completed in just nine days. Owens said he essentially condensed everything WWE asked him to do, completing the required steps back-to-back after learning in mid-July that he could begin working toward an in-ring return.

Two weeks later, he was back at SummerSlam.

It’s remarkable considering the uncertainty that surrounded Owens’ future when the injury was first announced. Now, he’s already challenging CM Punk for WWE’s top championship and looking like he never left.

WWE Reportedly Has Plans to Rebuild Its Tag Team Divisions

WWE’s tag team divisions could finally be getting some needed attention.

Recent reporting indicates Shinsuke Nakamura and the newly debuted Kyoki — formerly Hiromu Takahashi — are expected to become top challengers on SmackDown, while Fraxiom should receive increased television time. On Raw, Ethan Page and Rusev are also reportedly expected to be featured more prominently.

I’m all for it. WWE has enough talent to make tag team wrestling feel important, but too often the division has existed in the background rather than as a meaningful part of weekly television.

Putting legitimate singles stars into consequential teams isn’t the only solution, but it’s an easy way to immediately give the division more star power.

WWE’s Upcoming TV Schedule Will Look Different

There will also be an unusual wrinkle to WWE television over the next couple of weeks.

WWE is scheduled to hold a combined Raw and SmackDown taping in Cleveland on Friday, August 28, with Roman Reigns among the stars advertised. WWE had originally scheduled separate Raw and SmackDown events for the following week, but previously postponed the August 31 Raw in Charlotte and canceled the September 4 SmackDown in Cincinnati.

For viewers, the biggest thing to know is simple: spoilers could be floating around earlier than usual.

It’s also another example of WWE becoming increasingly willing to experiment with its traditional weekly touring schedule rather than treating Monday and Friday television as immovable dates.

Lil Yachty Has Reportedly Been Training for Months

Lil Yachty’s WWE involvement is apparently much more than a celebrity cameo.

WWE announced Friday that Yachty will face United States Champion Baron Corbin at Sunday Night’s Main Event on September 6. If Yachty lasts five minutes, Trick Williams receives another shot at Corbin’s championship later that night.

Bryan Alvarez reported Saturday that Yachty has actually been training for months with WWE’s Ivy Nile and her husband, Ari Levy.

Celebrity matches can be hit or miss, but WWE has become remarkably good at preparing outsiders for this environment.

More importantly, the stipulation is smart. Nobody needs to pretend Yachty can suddenly beat a WWE champion — he just has to survive five minutes.

That’s a much easier story to buy into.
