The grandest stage of them all Wrestlemania has came and gone which means now its time for the Backlash of it all. The Monday night Raw after Wrestlemania would start the Backlash with Randy Orton coming out to hit John Cena with an RKO. Also Gunther would show that he was upset with the commentary member Micheal Cole and would start to attack him but Pat McAfee would hit Gunther to stop him. Lets dive into all the matches deeper.
This all started because of the support that both Michael Cole and Pat McAfee had for Jay Uso, which led to Gunther losing his World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania. Gunther would attempt to choke Cole, but McAfee intervened, and he would be the one being choked instead. This is how we get to a match at Backlash. McAfee would need a week to rehab, then the following week on Raw, he said, “If I die, I die, but if you got a problem with Cole, you got a problem with me”. That night on Raw GM Adam Pearce was not there but Smackdown GM Nick Aldis would give McAfee what he was asking for a scantioned match at Backlash.
The Man, Becky Lynch, will face Lyra Valkyria in her first singles match in nearly a year. Lynch would return at Wrestlemania 41 to tag with Valkyria to face Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships which they would win. However the very next on Raw they would loose the titles back to Morgan and Rodriguez.
Then after the match Lynch would attack Valkyria in what was a vicious attack. The Man would eventually admit that it was her that attacked Bayley and made her miss her match at Wrestlemania 41. With all that said this was the lead up to the Intercontinental Championship match between the two at Backlash.
The main event of Backlash will be one that has happened plenty times in the past with John Cena against Randy Orton. The two of these men have had a rivalries of the decade. This match has a different feel and its a fresh story line. Sure these two have faced countless times over there careers but this time Cena will not be the Beloved babyface it will be Orton and Cena being the heel.
It has also been a long time since the two of them have faced off in a singles match-up. The last time they faced each other in a televised singles match was in 2017, and they haven’t met in a PLE singles match since Hell in a Cell 2014. This match may not be a fast-paced match like the old days, but they know each other well enough that it should be a great main event.
The match card in a whole is very well put together and will take place at Enterprise Center in St. Louis on Saturday, May 10. The first title defense for Cena on his farewell tour was a record-breaking 17th championship. Will McAfee get his revenge on Gunther and remind the world just who the hell he is? Also, will The Man Becky Lynch win her first IC Title? Stay tuned for all the results and a full breakdown from me on Total Apex Sports.
