The Texas leg of WWE’s summer schedule ended in Houston tonight with Monday Night RAW capping off a weekend of WWE Live Events in the Lone Star. Plenty is going on in WWE right now with the debut of WWE: Unreal on NETFLIX nearing as well as today’s announcement of a significant partnership with movie tickets proprietor FANDANGO that will bring PLEs to the ‘silver screen,’ but the priority is the (for the first time) two-night SummerSlam in New Jersey.
The August 2 and 3 dates that SummerSlam occupies are fast-approaching, and after a terribly busy TV/PLE schedule, it has made for some hasty bookings on the summer ‘show of shows.’ The episode focused on further cementing previously booked programs while expanding on the rest of the card.
With the return of Roman Reigns coinciding with the injury loss of Seth Rollins, WWE has plenty of storyline to tell, even if Rollins is out for some time, but especially if he is not.
It was Paul Heyman who began the promo scheduled for the final segment of the evening, accompanied by Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed and, noticeably, without Rollins. It didn’t take long for Roman’s music to hit.
Still, even after entering the ring, Heyman continued, admitting he did not ‘want beef’ with Reigns. In fact, Heyman went as far as to say that he and Roman are better together than they are apart, before once again acknowledging ‘his tribal chief.’ Roman was not buying it.
Reigns went on about how many individuals try to take credit for his success, but that the acknowledgment of the WWE Universe solidifies his place. Then, face Roman acknowledged “The USOs” and even “Solo,” in a surprising move. He told Paul that he could create any ol’ wrestling faction, but that the creation of ‘The Bloodline’ was “God’s work.”
Roman chopped Paul to pieces by the time Breakker got the mic and called the ‘OTC’ an “old dog.” Breakker claimed to be the ‘top dog now’ and the ‘future of WWE’ while strangely attempting to downplay Reigns’s current place and value within the company. It was an odd choice, with the crowd nullifying the cheers and overwhelming the half-cocked narrative.
Roman eventually swung on Breakker and connected with a Superman punch, which led to Jey Uso coming out to help his former leader and current cousin. The pair hit a picture-perfect spear on Breakker and Reed to close out RAW.
In a surprisingly ‘mid’ RAW opener involving CM Punk, the challenger for Gunther’s heavyweight title kicked off the show before the champ made his presence felt. He told Punk that he was no longer the ‘best in the world,’ and Punk did not react much. The steam is just not there for a match with one of the best wrestling performers taking on one of the best wrestling minds in the game. Still, it feels like something is missing from this match.
With just two weeks to go, the build-up for this needs to intensify, conceivably, so that the stakes can feel naturally raised.
Becky Lynch received an in-ring promo just before Lyra Valkyria and Bayley were to receive a tag team title match against champions Roxanne Perez and Raquel Rodriguez. Becky complained about the ‘unfair advantages’ given to Lyra — her SummerSlam challenger for the IC title. Lyra confronted Becky, who claimed that SummerSlam would be the finale to their trilogy and that Lyra would never get another shot should she lose. Lyra, on the other hand, upped the stakes for their match by declaring it a no-DQ match.
The champions retained their titles, but Lyra and Bayley performed well together, and had it not been for the typical Judgement Day interference, they might have won. It started with Dom Mysterio, who was out with the champs ringside in an attempt to avoid his meeting with medical.
Unfortunately, Raquel hit Dom in the face with an unintended boot before the medical evaluation, and AJ Styles popped out again for further mind games. This distraction allowed Becky to take Lyra out of the match, leaving Bayley alone for Perez and Rodriguez to pick up the victory.
After AJ Styles snuck into the match as a member of the WWE staff, this before earlier in the night, where he dressed as a custodian, and when he finally thought he had Dom cornered, the current IC champ attacked Styles. Dom, with his medical papers in hand, admitted he’d been cleared—making their match at SummerSlam official.
The match was booked earlier in the night, and you knew the viewers were in store for a banger. Both Sky and Vaquer put on a display of excellence, but just as the crowd finished a “this is awesome” chant, and right before a “holy s***” chant picked up, Chelsea Green’s Shecret Service was out to ruin the match. Green eventually made her way out there as the schmoz continued.
The new world champion, Naomi, made it out to attack 1/3 of her opponents at SummerSlam, though Rhea Ripley eventually made her way out, too.
It was initially reported that Sami would be out of action for some time, but he wrapped the ribs and ‘played’ through the pain. The continued storyline with Sami and Kross comes after a definitive win for Sami in Saudi, but further targeting of Sami means Kross still sees a darkness in him.
Zany fought hard despite the injury and constant Scarlett interference in the match’s final act. Kross came out with the win and a leaky nose, and after the match, he kissed Scarlett, and the shot of the blood on her mouth was epic.
“Say I told you,” Kross yelled at a helpless Sami, laid out in the ring as the segment ended.
