WWE SmackDown this week featured multiple surprise returns, championship matches, and Crown Jewel storylines. Which woman would represent the brand at Crown Jewel, and which team would become the number one contender for the tag titles? The answers to this, along with an open challenge and more, unfolded on the latest episode, recapped for fans below.
SmackDown opened with Paul Heyman cutting an in-ring promo. He’d touch on Roman Reigns, Bron Breakker, Brock Lesnar, and others before being interrupted by Cody Rhodes, who would try to force the manager to say who he is currently supporting. The Vision’s Breakker and Bronson Reed attempted to intimidate the champ, but The American Nightmare was the first to strike. It wasn’t long before the two-on-one was too much to handle until Randy Orton made a surprise appearance.
The first match of the evening was to determine the number one contenders for the tag titles. Melo Don’t Miz, and The Street Profits faced off to determine the next challengers. In a lackluster match more intended to push Carmello Hayes to a heel turn, the veteran tag team earned the next opportunity at the Wyatt Sicks.

B-Fab and Michin teamed up to take on Kiana James and Giulia in a tag match nobody asked for. It was a short match, but you could tell James didn’t belong in the ring with the other three. The WWE Women’s United States champion picked up the pin.
Drew McIntyre, injured foot and all, came to the ring to cut a promo. He would whine about not being the champion, blaming Cody Rhodes. The general manager heard enough and cut him off, which sent Jacob Fatu to the ring. The Samoan called out McIntyre for always complaining before a brawl ensued. The Scottish Psychopath would be knocked out by the very walking boot he wore to the ring.

The next match saw the WWE United States Champion, Sami Zayn, issue an open challenge for his title. It was Je’Von Evans from NXT making the surprise appearance. It started with a quick pace and extended chain wrestling. The young challenger has all the athleticism in the world, but he appears to jump as often as he can to prove how good he is at it. The Young OG does have high ring IQ, always in position and reversing numerous finishers, but the champ would ultimately retain.

Tiffany Straton would defend the WWE Women’s Championship in a triple threat against Nia Jax and Jade Cargill. This was a choppy match where the effort wasn’t there from all three participants. All of the setups were obvious, and they failed to find any flow.

Things took a turn when the Samoan threw Cargill into the steel steps, busting open a cut above her eye. The woman panicked from there. Jax noticeably forgot to kick out as the crowd rained down boos. The champ retained after the botched finish, and it will be the battle between champions who didn’t get over from their wrestling, facing off at Crown Jewel.
Stratton is setting women’s wrestling back in time, crumbling any work made by the women’s revolution. She gets to face Stephanie Vaquer, a green champion pushed by the thirsty Booker T. It was nice to see Orton and Fatu back on television, but sad to see the direction the men’s and women’s tag divisions are heading.
