Def Rebel's future as producer of WWE themes could be in doubt amid a report indicating that talent are pushing for a change in their theme songs. WWE's entrance music production has come under criticism in recent years because of songs produced by Def Rebel sounding the same.
Fans have been left guessing who is making an entrance during a Royal Rumble match because some superstars' themes are too generic. Even World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins looked confused during the men's rumble match back in 2024.
When Sheamus returned from injury in April 2024, he brought back his classic theme song, 'Written in My Face', much to fans' delight. That lasted a matter of months before Def Rebel got their hands on his entrance track and came up with '10 Beats of Bodhran', and the consensus was that it was a massive downgrade.
The Celtic Warrior admitted in an interview with Chris Van Vliet that he'd grown "tired of asking" for his original theme back. He added, "I brought it back, but I wasn’t allowed to keep it." He is just one of several current WWE stars who have had their theme songs changed and re-produced by Def Rebel.
WrestleVotes now reports that a few members of the roster have asked to revert to their original entrance themes. It's claimed that talent has been "requesting music changes for some time now", including outspoken names such as Sheamus and Drew McIntyre.
They add that time will tell if they are eventually granted their requests, but tonight's episode of SmackDown suggested that will be the case. Shinsuke Nakamura made his return in Perth, Australia, to answer Sami Zayn's Open Challenge, and the Japanese star brought back his iconic 'Rising Sun' theme produced by CFO$.
As seen & heard on tonight’s SmackDown, a few superstars reverted back to their original entrance themes. The Street Profits came up short in their tag team title match against The Wyatt Sicks, but they noticeably used their original 'Bring The Swag' theme rather than Def Rebel's 'We Want Smoke'. McIntyre will be an intriguing change if that does occur, as it seems the Scot wants to bring back 'Broken Dreams'.
Jim Johnston is regarded as the greatest music producer in pro wrestling history because his creativity was crucial during WWE's boom period, especially during the Attitude Era. Everyone knew who was coming down the entranceway when glass shattered or an eerie gong played in an arena.
While Def Rebel has tried to delve into this style of production, it has felt unnatural for the most part, as talent have either stated their names or catchphrases at the very start of a song. There have been some excellent theme songs produced during the stint, such as Roman Reigns' 'Head of the Table', although this was still heavily influenced by HBO's Succession.
Johnston gave his thoughts on current-day music in WWE, and his verdict was telling (via NEA Report):
"It sounds horrible and arrogant and I don’t mean it to be, but the music is holding these businesses down. I think it’s the singular reason in either of those businesses that there aren’t stars like there used to be stars."
He added, "It’s too generic. If you’re rising to the top, you’re just less generic. Used to be, you could be making dinner in the kitchen and you knew who was coming in. Now? It’s a crap shoot except for a couple of guys."
There's no word on when Def Rebel's contract with WWE is up but there were rumors of a deal expiring at the end of 2024. But they have continued to produce theme songs since, although reports of superstars requesting changes might finally be a wake-up call for the promotion's higher-ups.
