Wrestlers' contract situations are a favorite topic for wrestling fans to discuss. And why wouldn't they be? After all, it's fun to fantasize about a favorite wrestler's next storyline or rivalry in a different promotion—one they may or may not even join. In the past few years, many WWE wrestlers jumped ship to AEW and gave fans many dream matches that otherwise wouldn't have been possible. Some of these wrestlers eventually return to the company, whereas others decide to settle in their new home.
WWE signed many wrestlers to new contracts in recent months. Some of them were already part of the company, whereas others returned from different promotions.
During an interview with Ariel Helwani in April, Gunther revealed that he renewed his WWE contract recently. When he was a champion, Gunther had more leverage during contract negotiations, and he asked for and received some perks for his new contract. These include a tour bus of his own—something other top wrestlers in WWE also have—and a personal locker room.
Gunther has been one of the most dominating stars in WWE since day one. He recently lost his World Title in a WrestleMania 41 match against Jey Uso. Nevertheless, Gunther's history as a champion has been remarkable. He has been a champion for over 1,700 days in total in WWE, which includes his NXT United Kingdom, Intercontinental, and WWE Championship reigns.
Rusev was one of the stars who left WWE after AEW started. But this wasn’t his decision – he was fired. Over the years, Rusev became very frustrated with WWE because of how they handled certain things, including his shoulder injury in 2017, when nobody checked on him. Then, during the pandemic, Rusev wasn’t happy with how WWE was handling the whole situation regarding its wrestlers and voiced his concerns, which he believes was the reason for his departure.
Rusev recently departed from AEW as well, after a 5-year stint with the company. Earlier in April, PWInsider reported that he signed a new contract with WWE. There were speculations that Rusev could be Randy Orton’s WrestleMania opponent, something Fightful also hinted at on their Discord, but fans got Joe Hendry instead. Rusev returned on Raw after WrestleMania and attacked the Alpha Academy. Fans are excited to see how Rusev's spell in WWE turns out this time.
This shouldn't surprise anyone, considering Becky Lynch is one of the biggest female superstars WWE has today. Lynch's contract with the company expired last June, shortly after she lost the Women's Title to Liv Morgan on a Raw episode.
There was some speculation surrounding her career. Some thought she could step away from wrestling and finally start working in Hollywood. But she appeared at a media event last December to promote Raw's debut on Netflix, and according to a Fightful report this year, Lynch has indeed signed a new contract with WWE. Just days before WrestleMania 41, Lynch said she's not ready to return anytime soon, but fans were surprised when she showed up during the show to tag with Lyra Valkyrie, replacing Bayley, and won the Women's Tag Team Championship. They lost the belt in just 24 hours, with Lynch turning heel against Lyra after the loss.
Kevin Owens is currently dealing with a neck injury and missed WrestleMania 41 as a result. Up until last year, there were some doubts regarding his wrestling future. His last deal expired in late 2024, and according to Fightful, Owens signed a 5-year contract with the company earlier this year, with the wrestler himself confirming his contract situation with a Twitter post. His deal began at the Royal Rumble 2025 and is set to expire in 2030 unless WWE extends it due to his current injury.
Owens talked about his WWE career during an interview with Robbie Fox on My Mom's Basement and said that despite his neck injury, he is happy with how things have turned out for him this year so far:
“Even though I had a very short year — in theory — now that it’s, you know, in theory, like, my work is over for this year, I do really love the last four months and the matches I’ve had, the promos. I got to talk sh*t to Matthew McConaughey — that’s pretty cool. Even though, you know, I may not have another match until 2026, I still consider 2025 a pretty successful year all around" (H/T WrestlingInc)
