By the time she calls it a career, Chelsea Gray is going to go down as one of the greatest floor generals the WNBA has ever seen.

The Las Vegas Aces point guard is already taking command in the WNBA Finals against the Phoenix Mercury, notching double-digit assists in both games so far. In Sunday’s Game Two 91-78 victory over the Mercury, Gray also became the first player to ever record a game with 10 points, 10 assists, five rebounds and three blocks in a single Finals game. With a 2-0 series lead now, Gray and the Aces have a chance to cement themselves as a dynasty with a potential third championship in four years.

Just watching Gray for any length of time, it is easy to ask how she is able to have as good a grasp on the game of basketball as she does.

The path to Gray becoming one of the best passers ever started early on for her.

During Saturday’s media availabilities, Gray sat down to discuss how she was able to understand basketball as well as she does.

“Initially, it was definitely nature,” said Gray. “Like, I just had a gift growing up and seeing the ways passing a basketball, like, I just saw it.”

Eventually, Gray was able to formulate plans on how to attack defenses using her passing. She figured out which passes worked best in certain situation, or which angles to take to try and find specific players. Gray has refined her game in a multitude of ways over the years, and it has repeatedly shown during the biggest moments.

“The actual art of actually passing, I think is nature, but it had to develop.” Gray continued.

Gray has served as a focal point for the Aces’ two championships so far, and her teammates are grateful for what she brings to the table.

“When it comes to Chelsea and I particularly, I don’t try to practice catching her passes, it’s just a mental thing, and it’s a connection we have out the gate,” said Aces forward A’ja Wilson about her longtime teammate. “She makes my life easy, and I hope I make her life easier.”

If the Aces close out the series earlier than anticipated, Gray’s play will go a long way towards making the dynasty a reality.
