The New York Jets fell to 0-5 on the season via Sunday's 37-22 loss to the Dallas Cowboys (2-2-1) in a game that wasn't nearly as close as the final score would indicate.
During Monday's edition of the ESPN "Get Up" program, former Jets head coach and current NFL analyst Rex Ryan ripped the club that employed him from 2009 through the 2014 campaign.
"The Jets, I mean, that’s an embarrassment," Ryan said of the team's double-digit defeat, per Adam Zagoria of NJ Advance Media. "Who are we kidding? They got what, eight, nine starters back off of that defense, supposed to be really good. And they absolutely stunk up the joint."
Part of the Jets' offseason involved signing cornerback Ahmad "Sauce" Gardner to a four-year, $120.4M deal. Gardner has since made more complaints about referees than highlight-reel plays, and he's now part of the first defense in NFL history to have zero takeaways in the first five games of a season since turnovers became an official stat in 1933. In the third quarter of Sunday's blowout, Gardner surrendered a 43-yard touchdown pass to George Pickens that increased Dallas' lead to 30-3.
It's no secret that Ryan wanted to return to the Jets last winter. Instead, Aaron Glenn became the first head coach in the history of the franchise to start his tenure with five straight defeats.
"Absolutely atrocious," Ryan added about how the Jets defense played against the Cowboys. "It’s not going to be fixed. We know it’s a long-term plan and all that. But you gotta show a hell of a lot more than this. They’re going to run the D-coordinator [Steve Wilks] out. I think that’s pretty much a given. But you also gotta run players out. The players gotta start picking this thing up. I wanna see more passion. I wanna see it on the sideline. I wanna see Aaron Glenn show more passion."
Cowboys fans who flocked to MetLife Stadium on Sunday showered Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott with "MVP" chants after he completed 18-of-29 passes for 237 yards and four touchdowns against the Jets. On Monday, Ryan credited first-year Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer for having Prescott and the Dallas offense playing at a "Super Bowl-caliber" level this fall.
Things get no easier for a Jets team that seems to be getting worse, as Gang Green has to travel to London for this coming Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos (3-2). As of Monday afternoon, ESPN BET had the Broncos as 7.5-point favorites for the matchup that will occur at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
