There are no consequences for Go Pei Kee. But her case has sent a strong message to others. Leaving Malaysia’s national badminton team in the future could be very expensive.

The badminton authorities in Malaysia have made it clear that players who leave early may face harsh punishments. Officials say that Go Pei Kee, who left the national team in January, won’t face any punishment, but similar cases in the future might not be handled the same way.

The Badminton Association of Malaysia has said that player contracts already include a clause about compensation. Datuk Kenny Goh, the secretary, explained the rule. “The current contracts state that if players resign before the end of their contract, they must pay compensation to BAM,” he said.

The amount is based on the player’s world ranking. According to estimates, it could be between RM300,000 and RM500,000. This puts a lot of pressure on players’ finances, especially younger ones.

There is also a different choice. “Alternatively, BAM will not register them for any international tournaments for two years,” Kenny added. This would effectively keep a player from competing on a global level.

The clause is currently being looked at by the association to make sure it is fair. The council is expected to talk about the proposal at its next meeting in May.

Exits Before Go Pei Kee Show How Serious Disputes Can Become

This isn’t the first time that Malaysian badminton has had to deal with things like this. Lee Zii Jia and Goh Jin Wei left the national team in 2022, and it was a big deal.

The Badminton Association of Malaysia banned both players for two years. The decision caused a lot of anger in the badminton community and made people worry about players’ rights.

The issue was later settled. The bans were lifted, and both sides came to an agreement without any penalties. Still, the episode is an important point of reference.

BAM now seems eager to avoid situations that happen again. Making the terms of the contract stronger makes the rules clearer.

The message to players is clear. It may not be easy to leave the national setup anymore. It could come with serious financial and professional consequences.
