Smallthang2agiant960 posted on X “Happy birthday young king keep rising to the top” while, Kibira _fit wrote on X, “Beyond talented. Beyond respectful. With nothing but the best for him.”
The preliminary contenders were, Abdullah Mason, lightweight, ranked seventh in his division by the World Boxing Council and eighth by the World Boxing Organization with a score of 18-0, 16 KOs, while Carlos Ornelas has 28-5, 15 KOs.
The bout for Abdullah Mason versus Carlos Ornelas was on the schedule being a preliminary match to that of the heavyweight fight between Richard Torrez and Guido Vianello.
Not having fought for 15 months, on relatively short notice, Ornelas the Mexican (28-5, 15 KOs) took this bout following withdrawal by Giovanni Cabrera of Chicago (22-2, 7 KOs), the initial Mason’s opponent whose injured eye required surgery.
In the first two minutes of the second round, Mason landed several left-hand attacks on Ornelas and this caused a delay in reaction by Ornelas who in 44 seconds to the second round, had taken a knee. To affirm this, Naji shared on X, “I just interviewed the best upcoming boxer in the game Abdullah Mason!! This kid is a star and future pound-for-pound champion!”
Throughout the fourth round of the fight, Mason was in control, and with upper-hand left in 24 seconds to the fourth round, led to Ornelas’ taking a knee, which delayed his reaction. In rounds two and four, Ornelas the tough Mexican native had already been down twice.
Ornelas took on a knee for the third time, from another hard left by Mason, exactly one minute in the sixth round, holding on to the end. Unable to capitalize on a knockdown by Mason, Ornelas, not badly hurt, quickly stood up on his feet. Were it not for the doctor not allowing it, Ornelas requested an additional round. In the sixth round, Ornelas suffered a cut near the right eye due to Mason’s left-hand uppercut that landed.
Despite being outgunned and outmatched by the much bigger Mason, Ornelas showed a lot of heart and didn’t attack fiercely with good shots even when he was dropped. He just didn’t have the power in his punches to do any damage.
Before stopping the fight, Ornelas (28-5) had been sent to the canvas three times;- in the second, fourth, and sixth rounds. The referee Raul Caiz Jr. was informed by the ringside physician against Ornelas starting the seventh round, Abdullah recorded his 16th knockout and improved to an 18-0 win on a Saturday night at the Palms Casino Resort’s Pearl Theatre.
