Abdullah Mason Chases Keyshawn Davis
Angela Piazza/Caller-Times / USA TODAY NETWORK

Abdullah Mason has his sights set on WBO Lightweight Champion Keyshawn Davis ahead of his fight with Jeremia Nakathila.

Mason is currently ranked number two by the WBO, as the undefeated boxer faces Jeremia Nakathila next on the Keyshawn Davis vs. Edwin De Los Santos card. Mason stopped Carlos Ornelas in his last fight, taking his record to 18-0. 16 of his wins came by way of knockout.

Meanwhile, Keyshawn captured the belt after stopping Denys Berinchyk in his last fight, as he faces Edwin De Los Santos next. Mason may find it tough to secure that fight, given Keyshawn has plans to unify with talk of a Gervonta Davis fight. There is also a possibility he could move up to 140 or 147. If Mason gets his way, he wants Keyshawn next.

Mason Reacts

“Absolutely. We’re both in the same division, and I just got news that I’m ranked #2 in the WBO. He’s the champion in that sanctioning body. So, it’s looking very possible that me and I will cross paths. But that’s with any of the champions in the lightweight division. Keyshawn Davis, Tank Davis, Shakur Stevenson, and Raymond Muratalla. That’s the four champions,” Abdullah said

Bob Arum sees Keyshawn as the next Vasiliy Lomachenko, meaning that Mason would be facing a top name. Lomachenko retired at the age of 37, leaving the sport as the IBF Lightweight Champion. He picked up the belt against Kambosos in his last fight via a stoppage.

The win merely delayed his retirement, as Loma was considering it before the fight only to continue on his father’s advice. He retired with a 18-3-0 record, as a three-weight champion. Keyshawn has a long way to go before he can get to those levels. He would need titles at 140 and 147, but Arum sees a lot of potential.

“One of my fighters, Vasily Lomachenko, retired today, and the next successor for him is Keyshawn. So, I’m going to be looking forward to the next couple of years. That’s fine. Words don’t upset me,” Arum said.
