Alberto Puello (24-0, 10 KOs) came out on top following a close fight against Sandor Martín (42-4, 15 KOs).
While one judge had it 115-113 for Martín, the other two had it 116-112 and 115-113 for Puello. With the victory, the Dominican remains the WBC super lightweight world champion. This was his first defence of the title, having been promoted from interim to full titlist after Devin Haney had vacated it.
The fight took place on the undercard of Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach at the Barclays Center in New York City, NY. Fight fans around the world were able to catch the action as a pay-per-view (PPV) on either Prime Video or PPV.com.
The opening round saw both boxers fight with intent, but falling short on their punches. They became more accurate as the fight went on. Martín was the one pressing forward for the most part, though there were also times where he opted to move backwards. He was having particular success with punches to the body.

While Puello was able to land hard left hands from time to time, he had some struggles with his opponent’s defence. After the halfway point of the fight, there was much more infighting between the two which resulted in eye-catching exchanges. However, it also led to a lot of clinching. Puello started to have some success when he was at range and upped his work rate in the later rounds. In the end, two of the judges saw Puello doing the better work over 12 and awarded him the decision.
