There is no denying that Amanda Serrano (47-3-1, 31 KOs) has become a lodestone of Jake Paul’s fight cards. Her two fights against Katie Taylor (24-1, 6 KOs) have drawn crowds by bringing in the much-needed panache that was missing in women’s boxing. But with two prior losses to Taylor and a July 11 trilogy showdown loading, what should boxing aficionados expect from Serrano vs Taylor 3? And by headlining this all-women card, is Serrano in a pursuit of greatness?
During Serrano’s latest appearance on The Breakfast Club, Charlamagne tha God couldn’t wait to bring up her titles and ask her if she was chasing greatness or something greater.
“I’m chasing legacy,” she responded without any hesitation. “And I believe that I have accomplished that already.”
Her words weren’t misplaced. Serrano truly is an icon in her own right. She was the first person of Puerto Rican descent to become an undisputed champion. Moreover, having held nine major world titles across seven different weight classes, she also holds a Guinness World Record for the most boxing world titles won by a woman in seven different weight classes.
And this is no easy feat whatsoever. With a portfolio comparable only to the iconic Manny Pacquiao, Serrano is certainly not one to be messed with. However, her past two losses to Taylor have certainly left a bad taste in her mouth. And now, with the stage set for an explosive trilogy, in an all-women card nevertheless, Serrano has mixed things around to ensure that the outcome is in her favour during this fight.
“I have brought in new people for the camp. I have a nutrition coach now,” she said while describing her camp. Additionally, she revealed that she has also hired a new running coach and an assistant coach. On the other hand, Serrano did not shy away from acknowledging her opponent, “Listen, me and Katie had twenty great rounds together. We bring great fights, and we show the fans that we can fight. And this fight’s going to be no different.”
Meanwhile, Serrano’s long-time critic, Claressa Shields, isn’t too confident about her potential performance against Taylor. Talking to Fight Hub TV, Shields stated that Serrano was stuck in her ways, which would prove detrimental to her performance against Taylor.
“I think that Katie will win again. And listen, I don’t have a dog in the fight,” she said while also highlighting that she was not trying to undermine Serrano’s career in any way. “Amanda can beat her. But she won’t. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.”
