Women’s unified featherweight champion Amanda Serrano will begin 2026 with a January 3 fight in Puerto Rico streaming live on DAZN.
The 37-year-old Serrano (47-4-1, 31 KOs) will take on Erika Cruz (18-2-1, 4 KOs) in a rematch of their very bloody February 2023 war, resulting in a unanimous decision victory for Serrano, claiming the undisputed featherweight crown. The rematch comes 35 months after their first, but this time it will be contested with three-minute rounds for the WBA & WBO featherweight titles.
Although there hasn’t been any word on Serrano’s future, one has to question if this will be her last fight in what should be a first ballot Hall of Fame career. Serrano’s previous attempt at a fight in Puerto Rico was in March 2024, when she was forced to pull out of a bout with Nine Meinke due to chemicals getting into her eye, causing an allergic reaction before her ringwalk. Serrano assured everyone in attendance that she would return to Puerto Rico for a fight, and on January 3, she will do just that in what looks to be a fan-friendly matchup on paper.
Here is what Serrano had to say in the press release announcing her latest fight:
“Every time I step into the ring, I fight for all women, for equality, and for Puerto Rico,” said Amanda Serrano. “Getting to fight three-minute rounds in a unified world title defense in front of my people will be one of the proudest moments of my career. When I got injured last March, I promised I’d come back to fight in Puerto Rico, and now the moment is finally here.
“I want to thank Erika Cruz for her choice to face me over 10×3:00 and for joining me in making this statement for equality in women’s boxing. Together, we are showing all the young girls out there that they can do anything they put their mind to, and that women’s boxers deserve the same opportunities as men. Anyone who saw our first fight knows that this will be an all-out war, and we are ready to make history again on Saturday, January 3, live on DAZN globally.”
As far as Serrano’s opponent, Cruz, she hasn’t been too active, as she has only fought four times since their fight in 2023. Out of those four fights, she’s won three of them, and one was a split draw. This is what Cruz had to say as she gets ready for the rematch with Serrano.
“I’m very happy and excited for this great opportunity to once again face the great Puerto Rican champion, Amanda Serrano,” said Erika Cruz. “I’m grateful to my promoter, Universal Promotions, and to MVP for making this rematch a reality. This is the most exciting rivalry in world boxing. Mexico versus Puerto Rico means a guaranteed war. If our first fight was a colossal battle, you can’t miss what will happen on Saturday, January 3. Viva Mexico!”
2026 already has a fight card scheduled, and Serrano looks to kick off the new year in a big way as she once again goes to war with Cruz in a scheduled 10 round fight live on DAZN from the island of Puerto Rico.
