Andre Ward described Gervonta Davis and Canelo Alvarez as the current faces of boxing.
The face of boxing is a term that is often thrown about by many fighters. Davis referred to himself with that name after stopping Ryan Garcia last year. The fight sold over 1.2 million PPVs while setting the record for the highest-grossing event last year.
However, Tank failed to capitalize on that momentum as he was jailed for breaking the terms of his house arrest. But he put that behind him when he stopped Frank Martin in his last fight to defend his WBA Lightweight Title to remind the public that he is still one of the most electrifying fighters out there.
Meanwhile, Canelo continues to sell despite criticism over his opposition. His fight against Jermell Charlo produced a live gate of over $20 million. His last fight against Jaime Munguia also sold over 500,000 PPVs. This was despite criticism that Canelo did not make the David Benavidez fight.
He will now box Edgar Berlanga on September 14 during Mexican Independence Weekend. Canelo downplayed worries about not selling since he will go compete with the UFC 306 card at The Sphere featuring Sean O’Malley vs. Merab Dvalishvili. Based on their commercial value, Ward saw them as the two leading names in boxing.
Andre Ward: “When I think of the face of boxing…I think about Canelo Alvarez, Gervonta Davis, but then you also can’t leave out Terence Crawford”

“If I had to say who’s the face of boxing now, I think the face of boxing is a two-headed monster right now. I think it’s Gervonta Davis — you cannot deny what he’s done, you cannot deny what he generates, and you cannot deny the performances — and you also cannot deny what Canelo Alvarez has done for a very long time. I think one thing they both have in common is Gervonta had Floyd Mayweather, Mayweather gave a cold alley-hoop to Gervonta, Gervonta took the alley-hoop and took it to the next level.
“If you look at the history of Canelo Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya, Canelo Alvarez had an amazing alley-hoop from Oscar De La Hoya, the biggest fighter in the game at one point in time and the biggest Mexican fighter before Canelo came. You have to give both of those fighters credit because they took the alley-hoop and they did something with it. A lot of fighters fumble the bag or fumbled the alley-hoop or fumbled the ball — they didn’t do that,” Ward said
One fighter who could have gotten the name was Ryan Garcia. He built up his fight with Devin Haney to get mass attention on the bout. There was uncertainty over whether Garcia’s social media activity was due to mental health concerns or trolling. He then backed up his words by dropping Haney three times on his way to a unanimous decision.
Garcia’s following on Instagram increased by over a million, while he secured a million followers on X. However, his momentum was lost after he failed two VADA tests for Ostarine. Despite claiming that the amount in his system was not enough to enhance performance, Garcia received a year ban. That has now left Davis and Canelo as the biggest names in boxing.
