A fight for the ages? The British heavyweight magnum opus? Or a mere exercise in futility? The much-anticipated Anthony Joshua (28-4, 25 KOs) vs. Tyson Fury (34-2-1, 24 KOs) has long instilled a myriad of thoughts in the minds of boxing aficionados.
With Fury announcing his retirement following his second consecutive loss against Oleksandr Usyk , it seemed like all hope of the fight ever materializing was lost. However, according to Fury’s manager, Spencer Brown, there might still be a sliver of hope if Joshua takes the Saudi deal, that is.
Talking to Boxing News, Brown highlighted that there was a good probability of Joshua fighting Fury if he takes the three-fight deal with Turki Alalshikh .
“First of all, they’ve got to sign the deal first. That’s the most important part,” he said. “What they’re very good at, the Saudi Arabians, is a course, a road, and they want to know what road it is. If they can get the road in the right place, they’ll sign whatever deal you want as long as you’re happy and they’re happy with it. But they think forward.”
AJ’s manager and Matchroom boss, Eddie Hearn , recently revealed that following his talks with Alalshikh, he was planning to get Joshua back in the ring sometime in the last three months of the year. While he wasn’t cut and clear about the possibility of Joshua fighting Fury or his rematch against Daniel Dubois, he mentioned that he was waiting to see the outcome of Usyk vs Dubois and Fury’s retirement situation.
Hearn, however, stated that if a fight with either of those boxers isn’t possible this year, they’ll push for it the following year. It can be said that Alalshikh certainly recognizes the hype around Joshua vs Fury. But, with him constantly being on the lookout for crowd pullers and exciting fights, Fury’s recent lackluster performances might put a dimmer on the fight’s probability.
Brown, on the other hand, wishes to remain positive despite not knowing the status of Fury’s retirement.
“So, it’s a great deal for Anthony Joshua, isn’t it? A three-fight deal. Amazing. Is Tyson retired? Like I say, we never know, do we? But he’s very busy at the moment. He’s actually in the best place I’ve ever seen him. He’s 12 pounds above his fighting weight as well. He looks really well. He’s happy,” he said.
With the hype around Joshua vs Fury, Hearn is undoubtedly desperate for closure about Fury’s retirement. Referring to Fury as a “tease” while talking to Sky Sports, he urged that there was a persistent need to know if he will be making a comeback.
“I’ve come out of the press conference, went on Instagram, he’s there with his wraps on doing 12 rounds of boxing. Why are you doing this to us? What are you doing? Are you just deliberately playing with our minds or are you coming back?”he said. “Just let us know either way. Put us out of our misery.”
