Ben Whittaker and Liam Cameron finally ended their unfinished business at the BP Pulse LIVE Arena in Birmingham on Sunday, April 20th.
This was after unceremoniously tumbling off the ring last October in a dramatic fight, causing Whittaker to leave the ringside in a wheelchair.
The match in October was ruled a draw given that they were already in their fifth round, with the scorecards reading 58-57, and a third judge scoring it a 58-58 draw; this resulted in a split decision.
The highly anticipated Easter Sunday fight did not go down without controversy either. Well into the second round, Whittaker (9-0-1, 6 KOs) threw a right punch at Cameron (23-7-1, 10 KOs), who went down only to be saved by the ropes. Whittaker then followed with a barrage of punches, which Cameron tried his best to block. At this point, the referee called off the match.
The 27-year-old Whittaker had walked into the ring accompanied by a choir singing the song “Walk with Me Jesus” and wearing a robe written Jesus is King. At the sound of the bell, he went into a celebration mode, which was directed towards Cameron’s camp, and Grant Smith, Cameron’s trainer, angrily reacted to that.
“I want to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, if it wasn’t for him, this would not be possible. Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah,” said Whittaker to the press, before exiting the ring.
The rematch between Whittaker and Cameron was not an easy one to settle. First, there was the contention about how many rounds the fight would take. Cameron signed a contract to fight twelve rounds, which Whittaker’s promoters mistakenly sent him. The team later sent him a ten-round contract, which he refused to sign. Following negotiations, Cameron finally signed a ten-round contract, but not before he received a hefty pay from BOXXER, Whittaker’s promoters. It was not until the last Wednesday before the fight that the matter was resolved.
It is a win-win situation, given that Cameron had been paid beforehand.
