Benavidez vs Gvozdyk Fight Results: Benavidez Earns Dominant UD
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

In his debut at light heavyweight, David Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) scored a dominant unanimous decision over former light heavyweight champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk (20-2, 16 KOs). All three judges had this one 116-112, 117-111 and 119-109 for Benavidez. He is now the WBC interim light heavyweight champion.

Benavidez began the first round with pressure and a left hook to the body of Gvozdyk. Benavidez didn’t appear phased by the power of his opponent. Gvozdyk was using his feet well and a solid left jab but found himself having to punch with him. Benavidez‘s left hook to the body and power left jab was the highlight of the second round. His body attack was already giving Gvozdyk some issues early in the fight. Benavidez continued to hammer Gvozdyk’s body and switched to southpaw late in the third round. Gvozdyk tried to get his combinations to be effective, but Benavidez’s pressure and body attack were hard to evade. Gvozdyk had a solid first half of the fourth round, but a switch was turned on for Benavidez, and he started landing some huge left hooks and straight right hands that rocked Gvozdyk.

Benavidez began to flash his famous six-punch combination as Gvozdyk had no answer for it in the fifth round. Gvzodyk kept his left jab active, but Benavidez continued to work his way inside and landed big shots. It was a one-way traffic sixth round as Benavidez was landing at will. Benavidez dominated the seventh round, but in the eighth, Gvozdyk landed a right hand that opened up a cut on Benavidez’s left eye.

Gvozdyk came on strong in the ninth round as Benavidez appeared fatigued a bit. Gvozdyk was landing a 1-2 combination down the middle, which would stop Benavidez in his tracks. Although Gvozdyk had some moments during the championship rounds, Benavidez was just too much and was able to earn the clear decision.
