David Benavidez will attend Canelo Alvarez’s fight with Jaime Munguia on May 4.

Canelo defends his Undisputed Super Middleweight Title with accusations that he is ducking Benavidez. The Mexican Monster has a stronger claim to a title shot since he has been the WBC Super Middleweight Interim Champion for over two years. The WBC has not called the mandatory nor have they stripped Canelo, leaving Benavidez frustrated. Canelo responded to the Benavidez fight by wanting $150-200 million.

“You know he he brings he bring nothing to the table for me; just he brings just 25 pounds more in the night the the fight…but if he if if some promoter, not him, because he’s nothing to offer me…but I one promoter who I work to they come and say I offer to I offer to you 150 to 200 million. I fight tomorrow…that’s the only that’s the only reason I fight with him,” Canelo said

“Canelo, if I have nothing to offer, then why are you demanding that you get 150-200 million to fight someone who isn’t worth anything? Hopefully, after you make that 150 million, you have enough left over to buy a pair of nuts,” Benavidez stated

Benavidez On His Mishap

The Saudis are the only people in boxing who could put up that sum, but reports indicate they want Benavidez to face the winner of Dmitry Bivol vs Artur Beterbiev. Benavidez will box Oleksandr Gvozdyk for the WBC Light Heavyweight Interim Title on June 22, making the Canelo fight less likely. But the Mexican will attend Canelo’s fight to try and pressure Alvarez to make the fight.

If Benavidez does attend the fight, he must ensure his behavior is on point. The boxer was ringside to watch Diego Pacheco’s fight with Shawn McCalman last weekend. As he did so, he was interviewed by DAZN’s Chris Mannix. The following footage shows Benavidez is drunk and has slurred speech. That did not paint the boxer in a positive light since he is two months away from his next fight.

Benavidez has a history of mistakes in the sport. He lost his WBC Super Middleweight Belt in 2020 when he failed to make weight, weighing at 170.8 pounds for his bout with Roamer Alexis Angulo. Two years before that, Benavidez tested positive for cocaine after beating Ronald Gavril. Once again, the Mexican was stripped of his WBC Super Middleweight Belt. Benavidez took the time to apologize for his latest mishap, vowing never to be drunk again.

“I just want to take this time to apologize to all my fans and to the people that seen me last night drunk. I had one too many drinks and made a complete fool of myself smh [shake my head]. This will never happen again,” Benavidez stated

Benavidez must keep himself together outside the ring if he desires to secure the Canelo fight. Incidents like this are the last things he needs to remain competitive at the top level.
