Edgar Berlanga has outlined his plans on securing a Canelo Alvarez rematch.
Berlanga faced Canelo last year on Mexican Independence Weekend in a fight that sold 650,000 PPVs, bringing a live gate of $17 million. The fight did not live up to expectations, as Canelo won a one-sided unanimous decision. It was the first defeat of Berlanga’s career. However, he did receive some praise for managing to last the distance after having initially been dropped. However, the perception quickly changed after Berlanga was seen celebrating in Mexico, creating the narrative that he was simply happy that he managed to go the full distance.
“As far as the action, I called it in advance. Another fight that went the distance without any truly exciting moments. Berlanga didn’t win one round. He was never remotely in the fight from the first bell. Is this where boxing is going?“The bar has been set so low that fighters are just happy to see fighters last 12 rounds. What? Fighters are getting praised for simply going the distance with a 35-year-old Canelo, who hasn’t knocked anyone out since 2021,” Oscar De La Hoya said
He also showed nothing in the fight to prove he could trouble Canelo. In his post-fight comments, he referred to Canelo as his idol. Berlanga bounced back from the Canelo loss by stopping Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz in his last fight. However, he still faces questions over his resume as bigger fights await. He has been linked with the likes of Caleb Plant and Jaime Munguia. Plant is the former IBF Super Middleweight Champion, who also lost to Canelo.
Meanwhile, Munguia was knocked out in his last fight against Bruno Surace. Munguia also went the distance with Canelo in his loss. Berlanga has said there is a narrative to run things back with Canelo, but he will have to do the following. Knockout wins against Plant, and Munguia will help his cause.
Canelo has four fights on his Saudi deal, starting with William Scull in May, knowing a victory makes him undisputed at 168 again.
He will then face Terence Crawford next in September. That leaves Canelo with two fights left on his deal. Fans have been calling for a fight against David Benavidez. However, that is unlikely since Benavidez moved up to 175 pounds. That has left Berlanga with a chance of getting a rematch, but it all depends on how he looks in his subsequent fights.
“I just gotta beat Munguia. We fight Munguia I knock Munguia the f**k out, he’s giving me that rematch. Because the fans gonna call for it. The fans know it’s unfinished business, that chapter with me and him is not closed, I promise you.I told you the last time I’m gonna fight Canelo right? I’m gonna tell you right now, the chapter is not closed between me and him, we need to run that back. But, for me to run that back, I gotta make a mark, I gotta knock Munguia out. Even if I gotta knock Muguia out and fight Plant and knock Plant out, and then we talk. I know he’s gonna come back,” Berlanga said
