A former world champion has criticized Gervonta Davis, stating he has not lived up to the high standards set by Floyd Mayweather.
The Baltimore native is set to face Jake Paul on November 14 in what could be one of the biggest events of the year.
Despite a considerable size difference, Daniel Cormier has expressed interest in how the fight might play out, and many other fans are curious too.
But not everyone is impressed. One former boxer is not happy with how Davis has handled himself in the build-up to the fight.
This year, Davis found himself in a draw with Lamont Roach Jr., a fight many felt he deserved to lose. Instead of settling the score, ‘Tank’ has chosen to take on the YouTuber instead.
Paulie Malignaggi noted that Floyd Mayweather would have handled things differently, pointing out how Mayweather gave immediate rematches to both Marcos Maidana and Jose Luis Castillo.
Speaking on Boxing Scene Today, Malignaggi said: “When it comes to Davis, he says in the press conference, ‘Just be a fan and enjoy the fight’. Enjoy what, bro? You vs Uber drivers? I don’t want to watch that.
“Then, you get a guy who gives you a good fight, and then you don’t even give him a rematch, and you want to be compared to Floyd Mayweather. Floyd gave instantaneous rematches when guys tested him.
“You had a lightweight division full of danger and a junior lightweight division when he was there that was stacked with talent; he swerved around them like cones on a racing track.”
Roach Jr. may have offered a stiffer challenge in terms of pure boxing ability, but Davis will not find things straightforward against the social media personality.
Paul, who has a clear size advantage, is also known for getting under his opponent’s skin with his constant trash talk.
During the press conference, Paul did not hold back when speaking about Davis.
