Caleb Plant returns to action this Saturday night, making the first defence of his WBA interim super middleweight title against Jose Armando Resendiz.
The bout headlines a promising night of action in Las Vegas, where Plant looks to remind the world he’s still a major player in the 168-pound division, and bitter rival Jermall Charlo is also on the cards.
Plant (23-2, 14 KO’s) enters this fight as the clear betting favourite, and for good reason. A former IBF world champion, Plant has shared the ring with elite names like Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez. While his loss to Benavidez in 2023 raised questions about his standing among the division’s top dogs, he’s bounced back with recent success and now has his sights set on bigger opportunities later this year, potentially against Jermall Charlo if both men win this weekend and come out of the bout unscathed.
At just 26, Resendiz (15-2, 11 KO’s) is still carving out his place in the division. The Mexican-born fighter is coming off solid performances and has gained a reputation for being a typical Mexican-style boxer; heavily aggressive and durable. His two career losses show some vulnerability, but his pressure style and willingness to engage make him a live underdog, at least for the first few rounds.

Jose Armando Resendiz – Odds 11.00 (Bet 365)

Plant combines his boxing IQ with a flair for showmanship. Sometimes his flashy brilliance is perceived as arrogance, while others like the finesse and swagger about his work. With 14 KO’s to his name, he also packs enough pop to keep opponents at bay.
I expect the former world champion to control the pace of this fight with his footwork and jab to frustrate Resendiz, and then exit off of the centre line with angles and counter punches while pivoting.
Resendiz’s best path to victory is pressure. He can’t afford to wait on Plant or let him dictate tempo from the outside. If he goes all in and turns this into a fight rather than a boxing match, he might just have a chance to land a punch which changes the course of the fight.
But in truth, Plant has seen every style of boxing before, and at a much higher level than the Mexican.
Caleb Plant is a level above Jose Armando Resendiz in every department. Hand speed, foot speed, footwork, technique, IQ, defence, cardio, chin, power, and experience – it’s all in the American’s favour.
However, boxing is a sport that every so often throws out some huge shocks, and if Plant was to lose at 1.05 odds on Saturday then some serious questions would have to be asked about his future in the sport.
I’m going to go with Caleb Plant to win via KO/TKO at odds of 1.67 (Sky Bet); I believe Resendiz’s style plays directly into the hands of the former world champ. He will be able to land combination punches at will and I think he can hurt his man to the body, which will open him up for some haymakers to the head.
