Callum Walsh headlines the launch of Zuffa Boxing on January 23 against Carlos Ocampo, as we preview the upcoming fight.

The bout is the first under Zuffa’s broadcast deal with Paramount+ from the Meta Apex in Las Vegas. Walsh enters this bout with a career-best performance last September at Allegiant Stadium, where he secured a unanimous decision over the previously unbeaten Fernando Vargas Jr. on the Canelo-Crawford undercard.

While he has primarily campaigned at 154 pounds—holding the WBC Continental Americas title—Walsh is returning to the 160-pound middleweight division for this debut. Ocampo’s only defeats have come at the hands of elite champions like Errol Spence Jr. and Tim Tszyu, making him a formidable “gatekeeper” for Walsh’s aspirations.

Pre-Fight

“I wasn’t happy with the performance [in my last fight]. I wasn’t happy with my camp. I wasn’t happy with anything really leading up to the fight. It showed in the ring. It showed I wasn’t prepared as well as I could have been. I made a lot of changes in my camp. Big changes. I think it will really show in this next fight. I feel 100 percent better than I was four or five months ago. I feel like I am improving and definitely ready to go in and perform for this next fight. I understand I need to go in there and make a big statement after that last performance,” Walsh said

Breakdown

Walsh’s tactical goal is to prevent Ocampo from finding a rhythm by forcing a frantic pace from the opening bell. As a southpaw, Walsh’s primary tactical objective will be to establish his lead foot on the outside of Ocampo’s. This allows him to fire his signature straight left hand down the middle while simultaneously digging hooks into Ocampo’s body. In his victory over Fernando Vargas Jr., Walsh consistently targeted the body. Since Ocampo likes to counter, Walsh will use 3 and 4-punch combinations to overwhelm his defensive positioning.

Tactically, Ocampo will absorb Walsh’s initial flurries while looking for a short right-hand counter as Walsh resets. He will wait for Walsh to lung in and attempt to catch him on the inside. Ocampo will likely attempt to “clinch” in the early rounds, smothering Walsh’s work and making the fight “ugly.” By forcing Walsh to carry his weight, Ocampo hopes to see if Walsh’s cardio holds up. Since Walsh is moving up from 154, Ocampo may test Walsh’s durability to see if the Irishman has truly adjusted to the weight.
