The bout has been in the works and was originally scheduled to take place in September. However, negotiations between Canelo Promotions and PBC continuously fell apart because the two sides couldn't come to an agreement. (Some say Alvarez's demands were too high, while others think PBC founder Al Haymon was to blame for trying to scrap the fight altogether.)
Alvarez (56-1-2, 38 KOs) has been eyeing the opportunity to square off with Plant since he collected his third title back in May after knocking out Billy Joe Saunders.
Plant (21-0, 12 KOs) claimed the IBF world super middleweight title in January 2019 by defeating champion Jose Uzcategui.
