Canelo Alvarez finally has a date to work towards, with an official announcement confirming his next fight.
In September, Canelo lost his undisputed super middleweight crown to Terence Crawford in a high-profile bout.
Despite the judges scoring it fairly close, many observers felt ‘Bud’ was clearly the better fighter on the night at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
Alvarez’s hopes of a rematch were dashed when Crawford announced his retirement from boxing, leaving Canelo without a clear path back to the top.
We now know when the Mexican superstar will attempt to bounce back from that defeat, the third of his 68-fight professional career.
Alvarez fell out of the Ring Magazine’s top 10 pound-for-pound rankings for the first time in six years following his latest defeat.
There were initial plans for a quick turnaround, with hopes he could return to the ring early in 2026. But it soon became clear that timeline was not going to work.
Alvarez then ruled himself out of a shot at the vacant IBF super middleweight title after undergoing elbow surgery.
On January 15, Turki Alalshikh told the Ring Magazine that Canelo will fight again this year, but not until a special “Mexico against The World” event on September 12.
Alalshikh also said that while they are keeping Canelo’s opponent under wraps for now, it will be a major match-up.
“It will be named ‘Mexico against The World’. All the fighters from the team of Canelo against the world and the champion in the main event, in a world title [fight] and it will be a surprise, in Saudi Arabia. Inshallah.”
Alalshikh’s recent announcement included a detail that will make Canelo’s upcoming fight unique in his career.
Now 35, the former undisputed super middleweight champion continues to build on an already impressive legacy in the sport. His next fight will mark another step forward in his evolution outside of the ring as well.
Alalshikh confirmed that this event will be the debut show under Alvarez’s new promotional banner, Canelo Promotions.
Having a headline act featuring one of combat sports’ biggest names provided the promotion with an ideal launch for their debut event.
