Canelo Alvarez will look to once again defend his undisputed world super middleweight title when he takes on Terence Crawford in September.
Although Alvarez’s ability to deal with Crawford is being doubted by some, others have the Mexican as the favorite due to his size advantage.
When the pair meet on September 13th, one of the pound-for-pound stars will emerge as an undisputed champion.
Despite a knockout bonus being in place for the fight, one former world title holder feels Alvarez may not look for a finish against Crawford.
In Alvarez’s last seven fights, he has been unable to conjure a finish against his opponents.
Alvarez was also largely criticized for his most recent performance against William Scull. The low-output fight would see the Mexican unify his world titles, but not impress the fans.
However, Alvarez’s recent drought of stoppage wins is not due to him losing power, according to Robert Garcia. Instead, the former featherweight champion feels this is down to a change in mindset.
“Canelo doesn’t go for the knockout anymore,” Garcia said. “He just does enough to win. He dropped Munguia, but didn’t want to finish him. [He did the same with] Charlo, Berlanga.”
Although Garcia does not feel Alvarez, 35, is particularly feeling the effects of his age, he believes that the years the Mexican has spent in boxing may be taking a toll.
“He doesn’t go all out because he doesn’t want to finish his body. He knows he still has a few more years and a few big fights. He wants to take care of himself and not punish himself too much.”
Despite knockouts not being on the resume of Alvarez in recent outings, he is still showing that he has power in his hands after 67 professional fights.
In his last meeting with Scull, Alvarez could not score a knockdown for the first time in five fights. Prior to that, one of the greatest Mexican fighters of all time put down four opponents in a row.
Unbeaten fighters Edgar Berlanga and Jaime Munguia suffered knockdowns in their 2024 meetings with Alvarez, in rounds three and four, respectively.
Jermell Charlo was also put to the canvas by Alvarez in September 2023, being downed in round seven.
In May 2023, Alvarez scored a knockdown in his native Mexico, as John Ryder was floored in round five. However, all four of the fighters did survive to hear the final bell.
