Canelo Alvarez officially has his next destination even if his opponent remains a mystery. Alvarez and Turki Alalshikh announced Thursday that the Mexican superstar will return to the ring on September 12 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, marking Alvarez’s first appearance in the Middle East. The announcement was made via a video posted to The Ring’s social media channels. While no opponent has been finalized, the event already carries major significance.
“The 12th of September, a big, big, big fight,” Alalshikh said. “This will be the first card for Canelo Promotions. It will be named ‘Mexico Against the World.’ All the fighters from the team of Canelo against the world, and Canelo in the main event for a world title. It will be a surprise in Saudi Arabia, in sha Allah.”
Alalshikh serves as chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority and is also the owner of The Ring.

If Alvarez returns as planned, it will mark nearly a full year since his last bout a unanimous decision loss to Terence Crawford on September 13 at Allegiant Stadium. That defeat ended Alvarez’s reign near the top of the pound-for-pound rankings and was followed by elbow surgery, fueling expectations of a lengthy hiatus.
Now 35, the Guadalajara native appears ready to resume his career on one of boxing’s fastest-growing global stages.
Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs) has repeatedly said he intends to keep fighting as long as his body allows him to endure elite-level training and competition.
Alvarez previously exercised his contractual right to a rematch with Crawford, but that option appears off the table unless circumstances change.
Crawford (42-0, 31 KOs), a five-division champion from Omaha, Nebraska. Announced on December 16 that he was retiring following what he described as a “legacy-defining” victory over Alvarez. At 38, Crawford left the door only slightly ajar but any return would require a massive financial incentive.
Unless Crawford reverses course, Alvarez will need a new dance partner for his Saudi debut.
The September 12 event will also serve as the launch of Canelo Promotions, with “Mexico Against the World” positioning Alvarez not just as the headliner, but as the face of a broader boxing brand built around Mexican talent.
Saudi Arabia has rapidly become a major player in global boxing, and Alvarez’s involvement signals another step toward cementing Riyadh as a premier destination for the sport’s biggest stars.
With the date, location, and theme now set, only one question remains unanswered: who will stand across the ring from Canelo Alvarez in September? That reveal, as Alalshikh promised, is still to come and it figures to be a big one.
