Canelo Ends Relationship With De La Hoya Forever – ‘Don’t Want Him Near Me, Don’t Want That Vibe’

Canelo Alvarez has ended his relationship with Oscar De La Hoya for good.

The two ended on terms when Canelo left Golden Boy Promotions, suing the company and DAZN for a breach of contract in 2020. The lawsuit would get settled out of court, but relations have been strained since then. Canelo accused De La Hoya of hypocrisy, claiming he was not loyal. Meanwhile, De La Hoya felt his criticism of Canelo’s trainer, Eddy Reynoso, was the reason for their fallout. Both men have come into each other’s company with the Canelo fight against Jaime Munguia, which will occur on May 4. Alvarez defends his Undisputed Super Middleweight Title as Golden Boy represents Munguia. When asked about the possibility of reconciling, Canelo was clear that would not happen.

Canelo Reacts

“No, I don’t [think we can repair the relationship]. I’m not interested in being a friend with him. I’m good where I am, and I have nothing to with him. I don’t want him near me or close to me. I don’t want that kind of vibe in my life. The truth is I don’t like to fight with anyone. I’m a person who focuses on doing his thing. [De La Hoya] is doing his thing. I don’t know if he’s doing anything right now, but he should continue doing what he’s done his whole life,” Canelo said 

De La Hoya’s role in the build-up of the Munguia fight was initially unclear. The Golden Boy promoter alleged he could have been excluded from the presser for the build-up. The fight occurs on Amazon Prime Video for PBC’s second PPV on the network. However, it will also be available to buy on DAZN, giving De La Hoya every right to be there.

Since he is Munguia’s promoter, De La Hoya’s presence is vital to build up the promotion. De La Hoya felt Canelo’s team may have pushed for his exclusion, which ultimately failed as he attended the presser. But in doing so, De La Hoya called out Canelo for being boring as Munguia received the louder cheers.

De La Hoya Responds

“There was all kinds of s[tuff] but we cleared everything up. Yeah, there was. Oh, Oscar can’t be part of it. What are you talking about? This is my company. It’s Golden Boy. How can I not be there? So, we got it all done with a little push and a little tug. I promised myself I would not let my ego get in the way, but I wanted to be here for this one, so I had to push back. I don’t know about working it all out, but will I go up to him and shake his hand? Yeah, I can do that. I have no ego,” De La Hoya added 

While Canelo and De La Hoya may not see eye to eye, they have shown they can put behind any bad blood to make the best fights. Since Canelo has a good relationship with DAZN, a network he has fought on several times, those negotiations are much easier than they otherwise would have been.
