Canelo Wants To Run Things Back With Crawford

Canelo Alvarez has declared his intention to pursue a rematch with Terence Crawford, with reports negotiations are currently in motion.

The Mexican is focused on avenging the unanimous decision loss he suffered in September, which cost him his Undisputed Super Middleweight Title and marked only the third defeat of his career. Canelo’s career is currently on hold, as he recovers from elbow surgery. Despite the layoff, the opportunity for a rematch remains viable due to the two fights remaining on his lucrative deal with Saudi Arabian promoter Turki Alalshikh.

The key challenge now lies with Crawford. Crawford has suggested he wants to drop down to the Middleweight division (160 lbs) to pursue a potential fight with IBF and WBO champion Janibek Alimkhanuly. Naturally, that raises questions over whether the rematch is warranted.

“Before the end of 2025, Saul Canelo Alvarez was on a visit to TV Azteca in his home and talked about the plans for the next year, where he will embark on different sports projects. In addition, he reiterated that his priority above the ring is the rematch against Terence Crawford, who is already negotiating, and wants to accommodate the place,” TV Azteca (translation) reported

Do We Need A Rematch?

The argument against running back Crawford vs. Canelo is that Crawford’s victory was conclusive. When a fight is not marred by a controversial decision (like the first Canelo vs. GGG fight which ended in a draw, leading to an undeniable demand for a rematch), an immediate rematch is often seen as unnecessary. Forcing a second bout immediately, especially given the tactical nature of the first fight, risks a repeat performance, preventing others, such as David Benavidez, from getting their shot.

Financially, it is arguably the biggest money-making fight in the sport, especially with the involvement of Turki Alalshikh and his huge financial backing. For Canelo, avenging the loss to Crawford is a matter of legacy repair, as it was his first loss at Super Middleweight. However, another loss will increase the calls on him to retire.
