Charlo Eyes Munguia's WBA Title

Jermall Charlo is fighting for the first time in over a year, as he faces Koen Mazoudier on July 25 in Sydney, Australia.

A win, Charlo says, could set up a move to super middleweight and a shot at WBA champion Jaime Munguia.

Charlo has fought twice since June 2021 — a unanimous decision over Jose Benavidez Jr. in November 2023 and a win over Thomas LaManna in May 2025. The inactivity has left his standing in the elite picture genuinely uncertain.

The appeal of a move to 168 pounds makes sense contextually. The middleweight division has evolved significantly during Charlo's absences, and re-establishing himself there would require beating fighters who have stayed active and improved. Super middleweight, where Munguia is establishing himself as a credible champion, offers a title opportunity.

The timing of the Mazoudier fight places Charlo on the Spence-Tszyu undercard in Australia, now the first major event under PBC's new deal with DAZN. The platform gives him a meaningful audience for a return that might otherwise struggle to generate attention given the inactivity.
