Terence Crawford faces Israil Madrimov on August 3 as boxing insiders give their take on who comes out victorious.
Crawford has his first fight at the 154-pound weight class as he chases Madrimov’s WBA Belt. He has not boxed in over a year since stopping Errol Spence Jr. That was Crawford’s biggest win, as he became the first Undisputed Welterweight Champion of the four-belt era. Bud had knocked out everyone at welterweight, leaving question marks over whether he could replicate that at 154. A win makes Crawford a four-weight champion, bringing him closer to being undisputed at 154.
Meanwhile, Madrimov has the chance to pull off a major upset. He is 10-0-1 with seven stoppages. He may not have the most pro-fights, but his amateur record is telling. The Uzbek has over 300 fights, meaning he has seen various styles. He secured the vacant belt with a stoppage win over Magomed Kurbanov in his last fight. Several boxing insiders had plenty to say over who would win.
“I mean, Madrimov has tremendous footwork. He’s elusive. His defense is good. He punches really, really, really hard. But we understand we’re up against the pound for pound number one, the guy’s a genius, you know, I mean undisputed at 40, undisputed 47 trying to be undisputed 54 you may look back as the greatest fighter across our generation…And now it’s time to break his heart,” Eddie Hearn
“It’s very hard to fight for Crawford, to be honest. And I respect Crawford. I put him on the one of the best fighter in the world, but I will cheering for Madrimov, He’s from my team, and Madrimov could to be honest win this fight,” Dmitry Bivol
“I’m not favoring Terrence Crawford for nothing other than I think he’s exceptional, so that’s why I’m favoring him…You gotta remember Madrimov and these people, they’re different gravy mate. They’re not gonna swallow it because of the occasion, he’s not gonna think he’s gonna get too tough and he’s gonna give up.
“I’ve been to where these people come from. I’ve seen where they’ve grown up. [And] I’ve seen where they’re trained. I’ve seen how they live. That’s a tough fight, but a very good fight, very good competitive fight. I’ve still got Crawford’s knowledge, spite and just his awkwardness, winning the fight for him,” Frazer Clarke
“He’s strong, fit, fast, awkward angles, but Crawford’s pound for pound. For me, he can do it all, fight, he can punch. He can box. He can switch stance and box evenly, as good as either way. So yeah, I’d have to go to towards Crawford on that,” Joe Cordina
“This is gonna be a challenging fight for Bud…I look at a little bit of who I was as a fighter, he’s [Madrimov] going to bring, you know, that presence that in your face, style to the ring, and unlike me, that’s what he’s going to bring for the entirety of the fight, you know? So although it’ll be one puzzle to solve, unlike the few that I presented to Terence Crawford, it’ll only be one part, one puzzle to solve, but it’s a pretty, it’s a pretty strong puzzle right there, you know,” Shawn Porter
