Following Dalton Smith’s victory over Subriel Matias to become the WBC 140-lb champ, there are questions over where he goes next.

Smith made history by winning his first world title, as the boxer has spoken about his desire to unify. One of those options could be the IBF Junior Welterweight Champion Richardson Hitchins. Hitchins is reportedly in advanced talks to defend his IBF belt against Oscar Duarte. If finalized, that fight is expected to land on the February 21 Mario Barrios vs. Ryan Garcia in Las Vegas. Based on the current feeling, there is a chance this fight gets made, meaning Smith may have to look elsewhere. Duarte revealed that he is optimistic the deal will get done.

“I want this fight because I want to be a world champion. This is my opportunity, and I’m very happy for it. He’s a good fighter, but I feel this is my moment, and I’m ready to win this fight. I’ve been focusing for a long time on being a world champion. “I want that strap,” Duarte said

Smith’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, has teased a potential a homecoming at Hillsborough Stadium (Sheffield Wednesday FC). A massive outdoor stadium show in Sheffield would likely be targeted for late May or June 2026 to capitalize on the UK summer weather. The opponent for that could be Adam Azim. Smith has been linked with Azim for some time, with suggestions the latter was ducking him. However, with a world title under his belt, Smith has less reason to face Azim now. He can target legacy by unifying at 147, knowing a loss still leaves the Azim fight.

Smith also said he wants a unification with the winner of Teofimo Lopez vs. Shakur Stevenson, who face off on January 31. The Smith camp has cooled talk of a domestic clash with Adam Azim, as the focus is on unifications first. Before any fight, Smith may have to satisfy the WBC mandatory challenger, Alberto Puello, who previously held the title before losing it to Matias. However, if Smith gets his way, he wants a unification.

“I will probably be over there watching it. It is a great fight and obviously I have my eyes on that as a potential opponent for those guys next. Either. I will fight whoever I have got to fight,” Smith said
