David Benavidez is scheduled to make the first defense of his WBC light heavyweight title against Anthony Yarde on a Riyadh Season card in November, Turki Alalshikh confirmed Thursday. The location of the fight is unknown at this point.
“The Monster” was in advanced negotiations for a fight with WBO interim champion Callum Smith, but those talks ultimately failed, and so a deal with Yarde was finalized instead. While Yarde is in the top 10 at 175 pounds, a fight between Benavidez and Smith would’ve seen the consensus Nos. 3 and 4 fighters in the division pitted against each other.

Anthony Yarde is no stranger to the big stage. A physically gifted, explosive light heavyweight, Yarde has already challenged for a world title twice, falling short in both attempts once against Sergey Kovalev in 2019 and again versus Artur Beterbiev in 2023.
While his power and athleticism have never been in question, doubts continue to linger about whether Yarde can make that final leap and secure a world championship. He’s earned respect as a tough, high-level contender, but the narrative surrounding him now is about whether he can get over the hump.
At 32, time may be running short for Yarde to turn potential into legacy. Yet with experience, hunger, and still-dangerous skills, he remains a legitimate threat to anyone in the division.
David Benavidez has been publicly campaigning for a fight with Canelo Alvarez a bout fans have demanded for years. But Canelo has shown little interest in fighting. Often dismissing the matchup despite Benavidez’s status as a top contender. Canelo lack of interest is what made Benavidez move up in weight.
David Benavidez turned his attention to Dmitry Bivol. However, that path also appears blocked, as Bivol is reportedly finalizing a trilogy bout with Artur Beterbiev to break the score in their rivalry. The winner will go down as the top light heavyweight in their era.
