It’s fight week for one of the most anticipated light heavyweight fights that isn’t for a full world title. Interim WBC light heavyweight champion David Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) takes on interim WBA champion David Morrell Jr. (11-0, 9 KOs) in a fight that has been brewing for a few years at super middleweight. Although the fight could not be made at 168, it is now taking place at 175, which is the more natural weight class for these big men. Both fighters are at their physical primes and promise to make this one an instant classic.
Benavidez had only one fight last year: his light heavyweight debut against former WBC champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk. Benavidez earned the unanimous decision but it wasn’t easy as Gvozdyk proved that he is still a formidable competitor at that weight class. Afterward, Benavidez decided to stay at 175 as it appears he won’t ever get the fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez for whatever reason that may be.
Despite only having eleven fights, Morrell isn’t a rookie at this boxing game. He had an extended amateur career and defected from his home country of Cuba to become a pro. Morrell has been dominant since becoming a pro and that showed in his August fight against Radivoje Kalajdzic, where he earned a one-sided unanimous decision. Morrell has been calling out Benavidez for a few years and now he has the opportunity to prove that he has always been ready for this fight.
Per DraftKings SportsBook, David Benavidez is the favorite at -175, and David Morrell Jr. is the underdog at +140.
